A young woman stabbed two people in a store in Lugano. The authorities do not rule out a terrorist act. / 7:30 p.m. / 2 min. / yesterday at 7:30 p.m.
The alleged perpetrator of the knife attack on Tuesday in a shopping center in Lugano attempted to travel to Syria a few years ago. Suffering from psychological problems, she was interned upon her return to Switzerland, federal police said on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old Swiss woman who attacked two women on Tuesday in a department store in central Lugano was known to the Federal Office of Police. Fedpol had indeed carried out investigations in 2017. The alleged aggressor was arrested at the time at the Turkish-Syrian border. She was trying to join a jihadist fighter in Syria.
Fedpol specifies that the woman suffered from "psychological problems" at the time and that she was placed in a psychiatric institution upon her return to Switzerland.
Two injured women
It was shortly after 2 p.m. on Tuesday that the woman living in Ticino assaulted two women on the fifth floor of the Manor department store in downtown Lugano.
She grabbed the first by the neck with her bare hands, then wounded another in the neck with a knife, police said. One of the victims is seriously injured but her life is not in danger. The second suffered minor injuries.
The alleged perpetrator was intercepted by a couple who were there and then arrested by the police.
"We knew the threat could increase"
The head of the Ticino State Council Norman Gobbi did not say he was surprised by this attack: "We reminded all the cantonal police bodies a few weeks ago, after the attacks in Morges and Vienna. We knew that the threat could increase ", he indicates in the 12:30 pm of the RTS.
He points to too little room for maneuver for the surveillance of suspicious persons: "It is a legislative problem, at the federal level, which does not allow people to be locked up in a preventive manner. The cantonal directors of justice and police have asked to strengthen federal laws in this direction. Because we must have the instruments to intervene in a preventive manner. "
"We did not have enough information to open criminal proceedings"
Invited at 7:30 p.m., the director of the Federal Office of Police Nicoletta della Valle also regrets a lack of capacity for action, although the defendant was known to the intelligence service.
"We had known this person since 2017, because she had gone to Syria. When she returned to Switzerland, there were police investigations, and we did not have enough information to initiate criminal proceedings. Since then, that person has not appeared with us. "
Nicoletta della Valle recalls, however, that the intelligence service will have more opportunity to act in the future. "The new law to fight terrorism passed by parliament will give us tools that will help us outside of criminal proceedings."
"The propaganda tool remained intact"
André Duvillard, delegate of the Swiss National Security Network, recalled in Forum that the terrorist threat did not disappear with the end of the Islamic State.
"The propaganda tool has remained intact. Even today, people go to propaganda sites or social networks, and the ideology remains extremely present in a number of people. The intelligence service said so. At the end of May, we have about 600 people on the radar appearing as part of these internet investigations, and we have 60 people who represent a security risk.
The assailant has no name?
Psychological Problems? It’s called islam.
That would give the whole game away. It would be like instead of using the word “teens”, someone used the name Shaniqua.
The 28-year-old Swiss woman with an Islamic name undoubtedly.
Lugano is absolutely beautiful. Spent quite bit of time there and plan on returning soon.
Only problem is, it’s all mountains, with a beautiful lake between them. The border with Italy is very close so we would go back and forth between countries frequently.
Not a place I would expect terrorism.
Well if she utters an apology, things we all be unicorns and rainbows once again. As long as it’s in a cooperative, decent way.
Si, Senor.
I agree with you on Lugano. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. Not only was the setting spectacular but you could eat off of the street. We didn’t see a dirty car, a smudged window, a cigarette butt. It was immaculate.
The biggest problem with our trip to Lugano was that we went straight from there to Venice. Venice was supposed to be this amazingly beautiful tourist attraction but after visiting Lugano it looked like an open sewer with garbage on the water, tacky Chinese made souvenirs and an entire populace looking for ways to rip you off.
When the elites are finished collaborating with nislam in the destruction of Europe, they will jump on their lear jets and move to greener pastures to begin the same process again
In Switzerland:
1) Perpetrator attacked victims.
2) Perp was intercepted by a couple who were there.
3) Perpetrator was then arrested by the police.
In San Francisco:
1) Perpetrator attacked victims.
2) Perp was intercepted by a couple who were there.
3) Couple was then arrested by the police.
Bottom line, what? Is she locked up right now, or not?
Quite a few other countries have laws against publicly naming suspects.
Totally agree with you.
Venice smelled like an open sewer every time I’ve been there.
Totally agree.
Venice smelled like an open sewer every time I’ve been there.
Every time my friends living in Lugano crossed the border into Italy their driving style totally changed. Lugano was peaceful and traffic laws were obeyed. In Italy it was a free for all demo derby.
I commented that it was like multiple personality disorder it changed so much at the border crossing.
Funny thing about Lugano: right after I posted about how immaculate and clean the place was I looked at the picture in the article and there is a piece of trash on the ground behind and between the two officers. Oh well.
