Michigans mask mandate in schools prevents students from getting a Catholic education, a Lansing elementary school argues in a new lawsuit against the state.
Resurrection School a Catholic school in Lansing is suing Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon for his mandate requiring mask wearing in schools all day because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents of students at Resurrection are also plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
The plaintiffs are urging U.S. District Court Judge Paul Maloney to strike down the unreasonable order for schools, arguing its damaging developmentally and religiously.
Maloney has been asked to grant a temporary restraining order, which would allow Resurrection School to not enforce the mask mandate for now. Plaintiffs are still awaiting a response, their attorney Erin Mersino said.
In accordance with the teachings of the Catholic faith, Resurrection School believes that every human has dignity and is made in Gods image and likeness, the plaintiffs said in the lawsuit. Unfortunately, a mask shields our humanity. And because God created us in His image, we are masking that image.
Other defendants in the lawsuit include Attorney General Dana Nessel, Ingham County Health Officer Linda Vail and Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney Carol Siemon. Ingham County put out its own mask mandate when Michigans executive orders were invalidated.
