1 In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem.
2 One evening David walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA Q u a l i t y The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art:
this is The Bible in Paintings, not “Great Paintings” nor even “Good Paintings.” So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don’t need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby’s. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm asking the Holy Spirit to guide. Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.P a c i n g The pace may seem glacial to those eager to see their favorite events. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence; if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic. But where there is no art, that Bible passage goes untold here. The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing. Always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,

The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!
But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is being filmed right now. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year’s viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Here is a link for free viewing of The Chosen: “Works with your phone, tablet, and you can cast to your Roku or Chromecast.” Last fall I paid $34.98 for DVDs and ongoing internet access—best 35 bucks I’ve ever spent (I don’t recall how much our marriage license cost, but then it was 43 years ago).

Your reference is unfamiliar to me, but I’ll take your word on it.

Somehow, I’ve lived 71 years without hearing of Jimmy Castor, until now.
Another great compilation of paintings. Willem Drost and his pensive Bathsheba; Lucas Cranach the Elder, his paintings often filled with humor and pathos; Artemisia Gentileschi, who painted 5 versions of this event; and the Renaissance Flemish Jan Massys, magnificent for his delicate beauty of Bathsheba and the detailed cityscape.
There have been “scholars” who manage to BLAME Bathsheba for bathing on the roof, saying that she was attempting to attract the king’s attention.
However, She had full expectation of privacy, since in that time and place, most of daily life took place on the roof. People in Israel still do their laundry on the roof. And, because of this, The Torah demands that roofs be surrounded by a parapet (Deut 22:8). The parapet is for both safety and privacy reasons.
Not only that, but Bathsheba was cleansing herself after her monthly “uncleanness” This is mandated by the Torah as well (Lev 15:19-33), and she was probably out there every month, like clockwork. (The Scripture about Bathsheba mentions this in passing, and everybody would have gotten the hint back in those days)
Anyway, it stands to reason that Bathsheba was not “setting up” David.
David may not have deliberately gone up to HIS roof on that particular evening to spy on Bathsheba, but, as a grown-up and a person in a position of authority, he should have thought “Ooops!”, averted his eyes, and gotten off his own roof ASAP.
But that isn’t what he did.
And wow, what a price he paid!
And yet...if David had resisted temptation, we would have never gotten King Solomon.
I would have included all of Artemesia’s, had I found them. I had four of McBee’s yesterday and three of Cranach’s today.
David obviously is guilty. The text is silent on whether she bears culpability beyond her acquiescence once summoned.
Indeed. But he WAS the King, so she may not have had much of a choice.
However, much later on, we see that she was quite capable of manipulation.
Cite the Seventh Commandment and then suffer the consequences.
Yep...those weren’t “The Ten Suggestions”. LOL.
Being in the city, she had the duty to cry out.
She was, indeed, in the city.
And she didn’t.
Bathsheba and Nathan formed an effective tag-team.
