Pastor John Piper warns Trump's 'deadly' behavior will lead to 'destruction' in blistering post

John Piper has issued a blistering condemnation of President Donald Trump, warning Christian voters that the president's “deadly behavior” will lead the U.S. to “destruction of more kinds than we can imagine.”

On Thursday, the influential pastor and writer published what he referred to as a “long-overdue” blog post in which he pondered the implications of the 2020 election.

Piper, who pastored Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis for almost 33 years, reminded Christians that "it is not a small thing to treat lightly a pattern of public behaviors that lead to death."

He pointed out that all of these sins are mentioned in the Bible and are “deadly” enough to destroy people and entire nations.

“I think it is a drastic mistake to think that the deadly influences of a leader come only through his policies and not also through his person,” he wrote. “This is true not only because flagrant boastfulness, vulgarity, immorality, and factiousness are self-incriminating, but also because they are nation-corrupting. They move out from centers of influence to infect whole cultures.”

“The last five years bear vivid witness to this infection at almost every level of society.”

Piper questioned why some Christians seem to be sure they are “saving human lives and freedoms” by ignoring the destructive effects of a “self-absorbed, self-exalting” leader.

This is really uncharacteristic of him. He is from the same tradition of RC Sproul and John MacArthur.

I get what he is saying about the danger of having leaders that are prideful, but the timing on this one was awful.

Amen! I believe this man is a deceiver in many ways. He preaches a Laodicean Utilitarianism Gospel called Christian Hedonism. He is a rigid Hypercalvinist, and replacement theologian. All 3 are dangerous doctrines

Please rethink your opinion. This guy is as craven as Pastor
Pfleiger , the Obama buttboy in Chicago 12-13 years ago.

OK, let’s wipe out Trump for a minute, and to be fair Joe also for sniffing and laptopping.

Who is left?

Pence vs. kammmalla

Piper, let’s see you play out that pair......

Pence has probably been acting too holy.

It looks like Piper is a Democrat come hell or high water:

He keeps voting for abortion-enforcers while claiming to be against the practice.

Influential? I’ve never heard of the guy. ___________________________________________ "Yep. First time I’ve ever seen “Baptist” and “Minneapolis” in the same sentence."

Well, He did go to school at Wheaton College, an Evangelical Protestant liberal arts college and graduate school in Wheaton, Illinois.

I know this is frightening but this is very telling aboutPiper. Please don’t take this in wrong way but he is nowhere near the late Dr.Sproul. I know that God gifts men but Sproul is with the late James Montgomery Boice in godly gifts and running the race to the end.

I fell for it up til now, Jan. Sadly.
I think there are pastors who stumble on this point because of the Democrat tithers in their churches.
Once again it proves out that “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil,” (1 Timothy 6:10).

Not one more dime to that Never-Trumper.

No worries. He’s hardly just scraping by. The prosperity gospel has been good to him.

IMO, John Piper is a mixed bag when it comes to his writings - some real good stuff and some stuff that is way out there. Those would be great considerations to keep in mind if I were voting for a church elder but we're not.

I would agree that some of President Trump's actions are not in alignment with normal Christian behavior (he should pay more attention to Mike Pence) but has there ever been a President more aligned with the views of the Christian community? Dubya talked a good game but wasn't always there when we needed him. President Trump is willing to spend political capital on issues that matter to us.

I don't know if President Trump has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ or not but it is clear that President Trump has a worldview that aligns with the Christian worldview.

Good thing for Joe Biden that Miss Manners isn't running or he would lose John Piper's vote. While President Trump's behavior was boorish in the first debate, I might point out to Mr. Piper that Trump wasn't the one who yelled at his opponent to "shut up" or the one who called his opponent a "clown" twice.

They’re all interchangeable at this point, given the politics of the region: Baptist, Minneapolis,Muslim.....

I love John Piper and he’s exactly right. I didn’t vote for President Trump in 2016 because he does not fear God. However, I will vote for President Trump in 2020 because he has proven he’s a bit of speed bump to the demonic left but not because: we “are saving human lives and freedoms.”

I didn’t come to that conclusion. Graceful speech with the hope that God could change the heart of leaders is biblical. Doesn’t mean he is a Democrat, just being supportive of the president to open a dialogue.

But I still don’t understand the wisdom attacking Trump at this time, and so directly. It doesn’t offer a solution: there is no one else to choose from that will further the Gospel.

Stressing that there is “a character connection between rulers and subjects,”

Does Piper not understand that there are no "subjects" in the US, that the colonies split from Great Britain over this very issue, and that this election is about our not becoming slaves of a totalitarian state? Does he not understand that the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people?

We, the people, are the "rulers." The President works for us. So, yes, to quote John Adams:

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion...Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

Oh, thanks. I’m not saying he was as gifted as RC, but he comes from the same reformed tradition. I don’t know what to think because he has been very wise. This is a lack of wisdom, even if his central point is true.

I did another search about Piper. He looks like a salvation by faith and works kind of guy. I am not buying, what he is selling. I’m also, not into the New Apostolic Reformation, and the kundalini spirit. Just not into it.
