Then the Lord said, Rise and anoint him; this is the one.
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA Q u a l i t y The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art:
this is The Bible in Paintings, not Great Paintings nor even Good Paintings. So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion herethey dont need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sothebys. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm asking the Holy Spirit to guide. Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.P a c i n g The pace may seem glacial to those eager to see their favorite events. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence; if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic. But where there is no art, that Bible passage goes untold here. The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing. Always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so Im just having fun hereI hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.. .

Looking forward to the surprise.
On the subject, I find this verse rather funny:
Revelation 14:2 And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:
For some reason my college roommate decided to take harp lessons, and I tagged along once or twice. So, I’m ready!
I looked carefully at the pictures and I like the ones by BENOUVILLE Samuel Anoints Boy David Israel’s King on a Tease of Red Roots and Barrias. Those two artists show David anointed in the presence of his 8 elder brothers.
A key part of what God did here was to lift David up in the presence of his brothers. It encouraged David and humbled his brothers. Jesse is oddly silent in scripture. He just instructs David to take food to his brothers and the regimental leaders. This led to David defeating Goliath and coming to the attention of Saul.
“I imagine in the valley Philistine and Israelite forces are engaged in battle. Samuel and David are on higher ground, the two scenes divided by the tree. One side holy and pure and the other side dark and bloody. Just how I see it.”
I visited the valley of Elah in October 2019, and it’s actually the opposite. Israel encamped on the northwestern hill and the Philistines on the southeastern. In the middle was a valley with a stream. We walked along the stream bed (it was dry at this time of the year) and picked up some round stones, just like David.
David came from the east (Bethlehem) and visited the Israeli camp. They’ve found archeological remains of an encampment on the hill. He heard about Goliath, heard him speak, and went down and fought him.
Everyone on both sides could see the battle on the valley floor. Thus the Philistines fled when Goliath fell, and Israel attacked.
This anticipates a future post, I’m sure.
I favored those for the same reason. The parallel between David and Joseph as the youngest brother rising to power is obvious. The text here, rather than minimizing this element, actually amplifies it: surely him, no; him, no; him? No! And like Joseph, coming events reveal that David also had a circuitous and dangerous route to the top.
Or three...
Thank you!
