CHAPTER 8
1 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders. 3 But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.
4 So all the elders of Israel came to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”
7 And the Lord told Samuel: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king.
19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”

1 There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, who 2 had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else.
3 Now the donkeys belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys.”
6 But the servant replied, “Look, in this town there is a man of God; he is highly respected, and everything he says comes true. Let’s go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what way to take.”
11 As they were going up the hill to the town, they met some young women coming out to draw water, and they asked them, “Is the seer here?”

14 They went up to the town, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel, coming toward them on his way up to the high place.
15 Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel: 16 “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him ruler over my people Israel; he will deliver them from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked on my people, for their cry has reached me.”
17 When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him, “This is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people.”
18 Saul approached Samuel in the gateway and asked, “Would you please tell me where the seer’s house is?”
19 “I am the seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up ahead of me to the high place, for today you are to eat with me, and in the morning I will send you on your way and will tell you all that is in your heart. 20 As for the donkeys you lost three days ago, do not worry about them; they have been found. And to whom is all the desire of Israel turned, if not to you and your whole family line?”
26 They rose about daybreak, and Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way.” 27 As they were going down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, “Stay here for a while, so that I may give you a message from God.”

SAUL PROPHESIES . .
5 “You will go to Gibeah of God, where there is a Philistine outpost. As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with lyres, timbrels, pipes and harps being played before them, and they will be prophesying. 6 The Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person. 7 Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you.
8 “Go down ahead of me to Gilgal. I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do.”
9 As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day. 10 When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying.

17 Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord at Mizpah 18 and said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’ 19 But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king over us.’ So now present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans.”
20 When Samuel had all Israel come forward by tribes, the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri’s clan was taken. Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found. 22 So they inquired further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?”
And the Lord said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.”
23 They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller than any of the others. 24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the man the Lord has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people.”
Then the people shouted, “Long live the king!”

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA Q u a l i t y The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art:
this is The Bible in Paintings, not “Great Paintings” nor even “Good Paintings.” So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don’t need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby’s. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm asking the Holy Spirit to guide. Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.P a c i n g The pace may seem glacial to those eager to see their favorite events. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence; if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic. But where there is no art, that Bible passage goes untold here. The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing. Always remember:

The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!
But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is coming soon. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year’s viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Speaking as a God Fearing Christian and secondly, as an artist I must say I am really enjoying your project of surveying Bible Art ! I have been in the Sistine Chapel in Rome and THAT is as far as you need to travel to see how God USES art to reach Humanity. It is uncalculatable to determine how many people were inspired by a religious painting and thereafter sought Salvation .. . Your work is a blessing and I look forward to the next installment. That is certainly my prayer each time I post the next episode of this series. God uses anything and everything to, as you put it, inspire unbelievers to seek him, including art. I'm always on the lookout for Bible-art, so if you've produced art related to specific Bible passages, perhaps we can include it here.

1. Saul was looking for a donkey when he ended up getting anointed King of Israel.
2. Saul looks like a good choice because he is tall and handsome (no other qualities necessary?)
3. Saul will prove to be an inadequate king, and usurps the duties and privileges of the priesthood.
4. Saul becomes disobedient to God.
5. Saul eventually succumbs to mental illness, and is violent to those who love him.
6. Saul refuses advice, therapy, and intervention from his loved ones.
7. Saul turns on the David, who is loyal to him, and forces him into exile.
8. Saul eventually causes Civil War in his realm.
9. Saul takes his own life.
10. Was Saul a Democrat? Refer back to #1. /s
The story of King Saul is certainly a cautionary tale and therefore applicable to situations in every age, summed up best by God in 16:7, as we’ll see in a couple of days: “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Saul being handed two leavened loaves at the wheat harvest gives a clue to what his reign represents today in Spiritual Israel.
Not sure Spiritual Israel would like to be reminded that there was a King Saul period before the King David and King Solomon reigns.
Add to the fact that a man named Saul was a chosen vessel in the New Covenant.
Spiritual Israel was always supposed to have a King Saul period.
As Saul/Paul stated, first the natural then the spiritual.
I thought #24 did the best depiction of Saul as ‘heads and shoulders above any man in Israel’—close to 7 feet tall.
Tissot did a great job with Saul among the prophets.
I was thinking about Jacques Joseph Tissot the other day--his omnipresence forces me to think about him every day--and I concluded that God raised him up and gifted him supernaturally, specifically to illustrate these scenes with both an excellence in thought and an imaginative presenting that far surpass every other artist.

Yes. I saw Patrick Ewing in person at the Orlando Airport in the 90s.
