Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Genesis 3

Cain and Abel

4 Adam[a] made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.[b] She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth[c] a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[d] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”

13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so[e]; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

President Ronald Reagan is credited with the following quotation:

"Politics I supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first."

Although that quote makes us smile, I would venture that the actual "Oldest Professions" would be Agriculture and the Raising of Livestock. So the aforementioned candidates for the honor might actually be #3 and 4. Close enough!

Today we start a whole new series of Meditations with a HUGE theme running through it; Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds in the Bible". Right off the bat, we meet Cain and Abel, who are representatives of the real "Two Oldest Professions". Both of them must have heard wonderful things from their parents about God, because both of them offer sacrifices in a primitive form of religion. How do we know that God was pleased with Abel's offering and not Cain's? The Bible isn't specific about it, but a clue can be found in The First Book of Kings Chapter 18. This is the Famous "Duel" between Elijah and the False Prophets of Baal. While no amount of Praying, Invoking, Screaming, Dancing, or Self-Cutting could ignite the Baal Sacrifice, Fire came down from heaven and consumed Elijah's Sacrifice to The One True God. It was quite a demonstration! So, perhaps Cain's vegetables just sat on the altar, smoldered, and smelled bad, while Abel's rich, fat firstlings burst into flame right before Cain's jealous eyes.

It is a puzzle at first, because Cain was offering the fruits of his profession. What was he supposed to do anyway? Was God being unfair?

This is cleared up quickly as God confronts Cain. It was all about ATTITUDE. Sheep-raising was not necessarily a better profession than farming, but the condition of the heart while offering a sacrifice to God is what makes all the difference.

God gives Cain a chance to fix his attitude, and instead of taking that offer, Cain goes the other way, to the extreme of murdering his own brother. Even then, God does not strike Cain dead, but instead exiles him to the East of Eden. Once again, Cain is given the chance to make things right, but instead whines about his punishment.

It just confirms all along that God was right about Cain. And then, of course, we have the illustration and prophecy of the "Lamb that was slain from the Foundation of the World." But that's jumping all the way to the end of the Book!
