A little reading about the Alice in Wonderland nature of modern Physics helps to understand that our gooey brains don't create our consciousness, self, soul. It's the other way round. The idea of God as an old bearded man on a throne has its downside. When that is shattered for kids brought up on it in a church, or who receive ill treatment at the hands of elder "Christians" they trust, some will give up entirely.
My Orthodox-from-birth Jewish 10 year old last night: “How can we have free choice if G-d knows everything?”
(Tears in my eyes at his question— me being a Johnny come lately to religion)
“My own experience, “unchurched” as they say, till late in life. The arguments of Atheistic apologists don’t make me doubt.”
Indeed. I’m not fazed by their arguments, because they were pretty much all MY arguments before I came to faith, and Jesus already destroyed them quite thoroughly when I was putting them forward.
I think I also have an advantage trying to reason with atheists/agnostics because I can see things from their perspective, since it used to be my perspective. I know when they are being dishonest in their arguments, because I was being dishonest when I used those arguments, and I know when they are avoiding a point that hurts their position, because I used to avoid those same points.
