I remember my Grampa would show us some hard tack that he had from WWI. You could build a wall with those things.

Some call it
“Survival Bread!”
Just Flour and Salt which if stored air tight will
last a couple years.
You have to soak it 10 minutes or more before it’s
Edible. Water,Soup or Sweet
Solution if a Dessert!

My mom told the story of flour pudding during the depression.

Flour, water and a little nutmeg and sugar. Said they had many a meal of that and that is all they had. Till the garden was ready and the apple trees, plum trees and pear trees.

There wasnt a rabbit, or anything around to be had. Even ate the RATS!

I read that during the civil war Union soldiers would drop hardtack into their cups of coffee (when they had coffee). By the time they finished the coffee, the hardtack at the bottom of the cup would hopefully be soft enough to chew.
