Catholic Caucus: Daily Mass Readings, How To Post Them

We are at the point when Salvation is still not well, and I need a vacation away from the Internet. Let me teach you how to make a Daily Mass Readings thread. Hopefully a volunteer could be found to do it regularly or from time to time.

The memorial is most days, if not celebrated, omit that part. Date is mm-dd-yyyy, e.g. 08-20-2020.

Replace [gospel] with abbreviated book and chapter, e.g. mt22.

, where the last part is mmddyy. Just go to the previous USCCB readings page and navigate to the current date.

This is an example. Correct the date and correct the title. On the USCCB page, the title appears right over the Lectionary section, below various buttons that we don't need.

Now view the source of the USCCB page. If using Macintosh, make sure you have nothing highlighted, right-click , and select "View Source" or "View Page Source".

In the source page, find a code section with "Reading 1" in the middle of the page. That is the part we are interested in. Select starting with

< div class="wr-block b-verse bg-white padding-bottom-m" > ...

till the end of the Gospel reading:

< / div > several times

That is what we need from the USCCB page. Paste that after the center title.

Go to https://unbound.biola.edu/. You see a search form.

Select three Bible Versions: English Douay-Rheims, Latin Vulgate Clementina, Greek NT Byzantine/Majority Text.
Select the Gospel reading you need.
Put all the "links" selectors to "Hide".
Leave all the rest as-is. Press Search.

On the search results, view source.
Scroll down to the table that begins:

Select all the verses till you see:

Do not select the above code.

Copy and post your selection in a FreeRepublic comment. Add:

CATENA AUREA

Start your post with:

Go to the page for today's gospel.
Find the appropriate section. If you are lucky, the Catena paragraphs match the first verse in the readings. At times, they don't, so find the section that contains the beginning of the readings. Select the Catena section header, e.g.

22:1–14

View source page, do CTRL-F and CTRL-V (Command-F and Command-V on a Mac), and press Enter. The cursor will move to the section header in the source.

Start selecting source at the "< p class="BD" > < span > " preceding the section header. Go all the way down to the end of the text at the last "< /span > < /p >" but before "< /div >< /TD > < /TD > < /TR > < /TBODY > < /TABLE >". You have selected from the section header all the way down.

Copy and paste all that.

Now, in the FR edit box that you are about to post, find the section header that you don't want to post. For example,

22:15–22

Delete starting with "< p class="BD" > < span > " preceding the unwanted section header.

You have captured the sections covering your verses. Possibly, you also grabbed some adjacent verses that the USCCB did not include either at the beginning or at the end. If you feel up to it, remove those, and the commentary from the Fathers related to them. But I think it is alright just to post the Catena sections whole.

You are almost done. Copy the address of the Catena page and paste it at the bottom:

ART

Use your own tastes. I prefer iconography or the traditional art, Medieval manuscripts, Baroque or Counter-Reformation paintings. Use Google image search for subjects like "Christ with Apostles", "Madonna", "parable of the workers in the vineyard", etc.

Once you chose the image, right-click on it and select "Copy image address". Paste the address with the following template:

Sometime you don't have any information, or some of the information about the image. That's OK.

SAINT OF THE DAY

If the day is a solemnity or a memorial, or an optional memorial, find biographical information about the saint. Franciscan Media is a good source, also Wikipedia.

Post what you find, add a source link. Find an image of the saint. Often it is a sculpture. Post the image using the template for art above.

And now you're done!
