“The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever” (Proverbs 29:14).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever” (Proverbs 29:14).

“The King that faithfully judgeth the poor,” and that's usually a hard situation to deal with. Do you know why it's hard for a King to judge the poor? Because it's usually the rich people that have the most pressure in politics, and usually the rich people are rich at the expense of the poor. That's usually the case. Somebody had to get the wealth of those people and usually they are the higher up's and they are the political forces behind the government. So, it's hard for a King to righteously judge the poor because of all his advisors, and all the people around him are usually rich people.

You’ll have a hard time going to Washington and finding a senator, or a cabinet member, or an ambassador who came from a very poor background. It would be hard to do that, but you might find one. That would be the exception. And because of that it's hard to get the slant of the poor. people to the king.

“The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.” God made the poor, and he expects us to be kind toward them, and do what we can to help them. Christ said the poor have the gospel preached unto them, and that was one of His credentials.

“He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse” (Proverbs 28:27).

In these two verses, we see a Bible basis for limited welfare. Based on verse seven, where we read that the righteous consider the cause of the poor, if people are poor because of circumstances beyond their control then it is the responsibility of a king or of government and the people to take care of them. So, there is a Bible basis for limited welfare. Don’t you know that the church is to do that in Romans 15:26, “For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.” They are to take care of the poor saints.

I believe that is one of the responsibilities of government, but there again you know, it's just gone too far. When they started out with Social Security it was intended to just take care of old folks. It was like 1% of a guy's wages, if not less than that. It was almost nothing when it first started. It sure has gone in the other direction since then.

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
