A mosque in New York is reportedly still open for daily prayers amid the coronavirus pandemic that has forced Christian churches across the country to close their doors and cancel their in-person gatherings.

While churchgoers in many states have been criticized and even punished for continuing to gather, that same level of scrutiny has apparently not been leveled at the Mosque of Jesus, Son of Mary in Syracuse, New York. What are the details?

Despite the state's executive order, which broadly bans all "non-essential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason," neighborhood Muslims are still allowed gather together in the mosque's prayer room for calls to prayer throughout the week.

"About 10 worshippers in masks are allowed in at a time, though rarely do that many show up. They stand far apart from each other as they follow a prayer leader standing on a plastic-covered prayer rug," a Syracuse.com report notes. (Though in a video of one of the prayers, it appears that the worshippers are not at least 6 feet away, as the Centers for Disease Control recommends).

There is one rule for Christians and Jews, not enforced on Muslims. Just as masks and stay at home orders are enforced on whites and Asians, but not on Hispanics and blacks. The powers that be really don't care about hypocrisy and they fear being called “raciss”.

According to the Koran, Issa (Jesus) was the son of a virgin, Maryam (Mary). Thus "Issa bin Maryam" is his most frequent title.

The Koran explicitly rejects that Jesus is the Son of God, and states instead that Jesus was created (not begotten) in His mother' womb, much as Adam was created. He is neither God nor the Son of God, and He is not the savior of the world, and did not die a sacrificial death for our sins, and is not even the greatest of all humankind: just a prophet who paved the way for the greatest and final prophet, Muhammad.

It's all quite patchy and fragmentary. But it gives Muslims a kind of propaganda hook to try to appeal for conversions. Thus they say this Issa was a Muslim and you should be, too.

They say Maryam is a virgin mother, that God created ---did not beget, "created" --- Jesus in the womb of Mary. And Jesus (Issa, as they say) is the forerunner of Muhammad. Though they follow none of Jesus' teaching, -- zero --- as taught in the NT, which they say is a false document.

They say she is one of the three holiest women of Islam: Maryam, Khadijah (Muhammad's first wife) and Fatima (Muhammad's favorite daughter). Maryam is the only woman mentioned in the Koran by name.

It's all pervasively garbled and fragmentary.

In Islam, Jesus is considered a prophet, but Mohammad is the Last Prophet.

Also, we Christians are “People of the Book”, not infidels. They believe we are Believers in the same God, but misguided in our worship.

“Jesus son of Mary” is notionally Islam’s number two prophet after Muhammad, but the story is totally unlike any found in the New Testament. For one thing, he escapes the cross and ends up in Mecca.
