There should be a collective mea culpa... this is all smokes and mirror. Imagine if a father found his son molested a neighbor kid, it would bring disgrace to the family and there would be an owning of the problem by the family.
I see no such collective ownership and solving of this problem by the church and its leadership sucks, given the catholic habit of not questioning its authorities
Last but not least, a simple vow in heart is not enough. The military mantra of not leaving a soldier behind is not just lip services , it also is concretized by preferential health benefits, life insurance etc.
All the catholic needs to do is set up a protection fund for victims and to promote a program of volunteer neutering or removal of thyroid of priests
There have been loads of superficial mea culpas over the past 40 years at least, but apologizing for something that one sees as someone else’s problem that happened in the past does not lead to change in the present.
As well, if what has happened in the past is just the top of the iceberg, particularly in the various ways that the vow of chastity has been poorly lived and embraced, there is a huge temptation to simply deal with the top of the iceberg rather than addressing the whole thing. A mea culpa aimed over at the most previous points (which certainly are not to be minimized in any way) is not going to solve the problem.
