Russian Orthodox Church: Stalin Has a Place in Temple Dedicate[d] to Russian Armed Forces

The Experts’ Council for Church Art, Architecture and Restoration of the Russian Orthodox Church considers that the leaders of the state and Joseph Stalin will be included in the mosaics that will decorate the walls of the church dedicated to the Armed Forces of Russia.

The statement was made by the Chair of the experts’ council, Archpriest Leonid Kalinin, in the TASS Russian News Agency.

According to Leonid Kalinin, Joseph Stalin as the supreme military commander of the Soviet army in the period 1941-1945 will be included in the mosaic entitled “The Victory Parade,” which was created based on photographs.

“The council considers these images to be absolutely appropriate, reflecting historical truth from which pages cannot be torn out arbitrarily,” said Archpriest Leonid Kalinin.

However, he said that some members of the council of the Russian Orthodox Church did not agree with this position. “Not everyone likes it, not all members of the council like it, maybe because their relatives were unjustly persecuted, something that I don’t like either. We cannot tear out this page from history nor did we celebrate the memory of a man who contributed greatly to this Victory, we cannot. Therefore, reluctantly, we did it,” added Archpriest Leonid Kalinin.

Does anyone think the Germans would put Hitler in one?

Stalin was arguably worse than Hitler.

I have also recently read that Hirohito bore quite a bit more blame for WWII and Japanese atrocities than generally known. Still MacArthur was probably correct in treating him well.

Stalin ignored reports that the Germans were about to invade. Strike one.
Then he froze during the first weeks of the invasion. Strike two.

But after that he did a pretty good job. He refusal to leave Moscow when the Germans were at the outskirts of the city did a lot to improve morale. And for the most part he left his generals alone to run the war. That was quite unlike Hitler’s approach (and quite unlike LBJ’s).

Think of how many historical figures we have written out of US history.

Is this the new church that’s to have front steps made from melted-down German small arms?

Oh, yes. I was so focused on the German invasion that I forgot about that. That’s another big negative when considering Stalin as a military leader.
