Moscow, April 20, Interfax - The Council of Ulema of the Spiritual Muslim Board of Russia has issued a theological resolution on the holy month of Ramadan, which will begin in the evening of April 23 and will take place amid the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions associated with it.
"Due to the current situation associated with the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19), and also the ban on mass assemblies in Moscow and other regions of Russia, the council finds it is better and necessary to say the Taraweeh prayer at home," a statement posted on the Muslim board's website said.
The Islamic theologians recommend that Muslims only pray in mosques with the minimal number of people necessary to make a collective namaz valid, that is, with an imam, a muezzin, and a mosque employee, this Ramadan. If the epidemiological situation in the country remains difficult and the ban on mass assemblies is extended, the holiday namaz will also be held in mosques this year, attended by the same three people, the statement said.
Muslims infected with coronavirus should fast or not fast this Ramadan, depending on the recommendations of a qualified doctor, it said. "If fasting is really counter-indicated for a person, for example, due to the high probability of his physical state, health, worsening, he shouldn't fast. He will make up for the missed fasting days in the proportion of one to one after recovering," the statement said.
In the meantime, quarantine and self-isolation due to coronavirus should not influence the observance by Muslims of mandatory fasting, and there is no connection between fasting and the risk of contracting coronavirus, it said.
The theologians have also determined the amount of donations a good Muslim should make in the holy Muslim month of Ramadan: 100 rubles for low-income people, 300 rubles for people with medium incomes, and starting at 500 rubles for wealthy people. These amounts were determined based on the average costs of such food products as figs, barley, wheat, and raisins, which are mentioned in authentic hadiths.
I won’t hold my breath. But I will make some popcorn.
Actually, I think it would be OK. ;o)
Yes, they should crowd closer together.
Wow, rational behavior. Mark my calendar.
