“He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich” (Proverbs 21:17).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich” (Proverbs 21:17).

“He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man,” this is one of the signs of the last days, according to Second Timothy 3:4 says that men will be “lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.” Churches are empty while sports stadiums of filled to capacity. It is not known how much was spent on missions last year, but Americans spend at least a hundred million dollars on those little disposable lighters.

“He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man,” I’ll tell you why. Pleasure is expensive. I have no idea how much it costs for a family of four to attend a sports event, but I’ve read where it can be hundreds of dollars by the time you figure the cost of parking and food. It is ridiculous. It can cost a man over ten dollars anymore to go and have a hamburger at one of these fast food establishment—imagine feeding the whole family. And it isn’t getting any easier with these businesses being forced to pay kids a ridiculously high minimum wage. They are putting businesses out of business with their madness.

“He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man,” you look at rich people. It is true that they have a lot of things, but they never got to where they are financially by wasting money on pleasure. They got to where they are by being frugal with their money and investing wisely by sacrificing somewhere along the line to make the money. Later on, they had extra money to spend on pleasure. The people spending all that money are going into debt to do it, thanks to those little plastic cards that make a man feel like he can buy anything on easy payments. Nothing easy about those payments though.

“. . . he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich,” that is generally true. There are men that spend their whole paycheck at the local liquor establishment while their families are sitting at home wondering where their next meal is going to come from.

An easy way to get richer is to stop spending! It is not the high cost of living that hurts people, but the cost of high living! The typical American is addicted to an extravagant lifestyle that keeps him poor and stressed. The pleasure, wine, and oil of Solomon’s day are the entertainment, toys, and eating out of today. Individuals, businesses, and the nation are financially sick and dying due to excessive spending.

Most spend more than they need to spend. But many men crave pleasure and luxury, and they spend themselves into poverty. These people are always in financial trouble, but they never stop wasteful spending. They are convinced they deserve and need the things they buy. They will always be poor. Though many of these people have adequate or better income, they spend it all and then some. Bankruptcies of all kinds are on the rise.

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.

In the last few years my life has gotten simpler and it is more comfortable and less stressful and I am more grateful and has more joy of life.
Sometimes things become burdens and now I seem to enjoy more the things I do have a small but Pleasant house and a wonderful dog companion to share the house in yard with.
Kind and pleasant Neighbors a safe neighborhood and plenty of food in my refrigerator. My only Vice is having the Wall Street Journal delivered haha

Oh it is so true that we have become people of pleasure. I do believe that this virus has caused many of us, including myself, to reexamine our loves and devotion or lack thereof to our Heavenly Father.
May God draw us ever to His bleeding side and may we see the price that was paid for our salvation and once again fall in love with our Savior.....
