The Holy Week Musings of Pope Francis

Fretting over the fate of Judas wouldn’t seem a high priority for a pope. But it is a subject that gnaws at Pope Francis.

In 2014, the Religion News Service ran an article entitled “Pope Francis: Judas Wasn’t So Bad.” It quoted from a sermon in which he said all of Jesus Christ’s disciples were sinners:

Judas was not the one who sinned the most: I don’t know who sinned the most.… Judas, poor man, is the one who closed himself to love and that is why he became a traitor. And they all ran away during the difficult time of the Passion and left Jesus alone. They are all sinners.

This last week Pope Francis returned to the subject of Judas. In a homily last Wednesday, he speculated on the eternal destination of Judas, saying he didn’t know if he went to Hell. Pope Francis said,...

The Pope’s (or I own) denial that all of us are sinful and unworthy would be a huge mistake. We must understand that God is HOLY. He cannot tolerate sin. The fruit of the spirit is: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Notice that “tolerance” is not included. And yet God wants to be able to commune with His creation. Our sin must be paid for. To tolerate evil is to deny justice. Therefore God offers us grace. He loves us so much that He gave His only Son as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Grace involves only one thing on our part. We must believe and accept the gift. Otherwise we cannot be worthy of eternal fellowship with a perfect God.

Definitely misguided...but the Pope is entitled to his private opinions... or speculations.... which after all can only be of HIS opinion... Since we know how Christ delineated that ponderance clearly and exactly:

69And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
70 And we have believed and have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of God.

71 Jesus answered them: Have not I chosen you twelve; and one of you is a devil?

72 Now he meant Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon: for this same was about to betray him, whereas he was one of the twelve.

But they're not private opinions, are they, when he voices them in sermons and interviews?

ahh yes- you are correct... should have typed "personal"... not private at all when he involves a public setting...
Although thinking about it.... its probably both... starting in private and becoming ideologically personal for Holy Father... as I assume to be the process of developing "private judgement" per se.. (pun intended)

Feeling sorry for Lucifer and Judas is typical for leftist Jesuits mired in the ‘60s. It reveals an attitude that says I am smarter and more merciful than God.
