Rome churches remain open after Catholics rail against ‘Christ in quarantine’

VATICAN CITY – A cardinal on Friday modified his order to close Rome’s churches to help contain the spread of coronavirus after Pope Francis cautioned against “drastic measures” and Catholics took to social media to complain.

Cardinal Angelo De Donatis issued a new decree less than a day after his initial order. Many churches in the Italian capital will now remain open.

Some Catholics accused the cardinal of caving into the government after his initial decree on Thursday night. Andrea Fauro said on social media the move had put “Christ in quarantine”.

Catholic bishops around the world were deciding how to deal with the pandemic in their own dioceses and what guidance they should give to the 1.3 billion-member Church in places from Little Rock to Lyon.

“Drastic measures are not always good,” the pope said on Friday in improvised remarks at the start of his morning Mass, streamed on the internet and televised live without outside participants in order to limit gatherings of people.

Francis prayed that God give pastors “the strength and even the capacity to choose the best means to help” those suffering from the pandemic “so that they can provide measures that do not leave the holy faithful people of God alone”.

Hours after the pope spoke, De Donatis modified the decree. Whereas most of Rome’s more than 750 churches were to have been closed until April 3, the new decree says all parish churches and those run by religious communities will remain open.

Those that will close number fewer than 300 and do not have a parish community or are visited mostly by tourists.

The pope is bishop of Rome and the cardinal is his administrative vicar.

As long as they are willing to all those things...

Those who have gotten over the THING can help others.

This is where Darwin’s law will rule the day. If you don’t use knowledge to stay safe, your risk of dying is far greater. And this is none of our business if they want to self-destruct. (We already have the pizza recipe)

Italy’s cases per million are double Iran and Korea and 6X China. The combination of Italian incompetence and the Catholic church’s refusal to shut down communion services are making this thing far worse than it needs to be.

Catholic church’s refusal to shut down communion services

I thought a trivial portion of Europe actually attended church any more. It certainly appeared that way when I visited a few years ago. Huge cathedrals with few services and fewer attendees.

So, to what do we attribute the Italian infection rate that is 2X Europe, Korea and Iran?

But those that go, the older population, are the most at risk from coronavirus.

We don't know that. If a priest or one of the attendants is infected and continues to come in contact with people, then it's material.

The transmission models are well refined. Shut down services and if the transmission slows after that, you have the culprit.

We don't know that.

We also don't know who's infected when we enter a grocery store, restaurant or fast-food joint.

. For the billionth time, Italy has a huge Chinese expat community. Almost a million of them. Since the ‘70s There’s your vector. Mostly garment factory slaves.

You want to compare them to each other. Fine by me! Grocery stores, restaurants and fast-food joints don't resist commonsense changes to traffic patterns to deal with the issue at hand. Starbucks is changing their queue process for instance. Public health laws cover workers at those establishments and legally require them to conform to health and hygiene norms. So, since they are all analogous, let's expect the same kind of cooperation from churches!

No they don't compare at all. Feed the soul, starve the body.

What about it? I doesn't address the customers, who outnumber the employees.

If it’s the Chinese, then why is Italy’s infection rate 6X China?

Because the chicoms knew exactly what the nature of the escaped bioweapon was and acted quickly, taking extreme steps such as bulldozing roads and throwing "escapees" into, who knows? Ovens?

The chinese in Italy and the Italian government are still dancing around the true nature of the virus. There's your answer.
