It was not coronavirus. It was bubonic plague, a much more deadly disease...years before anyone knew what caused it.
It was 1527, and a case of the bubonic plague was found in Wittenberg, where Luther was based.
The Wittenberg University was closed (familiar?). Luther was urged to leave, even by his greatest supporter the Elector (prince) who was in charge of the town. After being besieged by pastors wanted him to make a statement, Luther sent out an open letter. Its title is translated often as Whether one may flee a deadly plague or as the printer had it Whether one may flee death...
Luther does not answer What would Jesus do? rather he addresses What would you do if it was Jesus? In a key quote, relevant to our coronavirus era he says:
This I well know, that if it were Christ or his mother who were laid low by illness everybody would be so solicitous and would gladly become a servant or helper. Everyone would want to be bold and fearless; nobody would flee but everyone would come running If you wish to serve Christ and to wait on him, very well, you have your sick neighbour close at hand. Go to him and serve him, and you will surely find Christ in him
Luther commends those of strong faith but notes Since it is generally true of Christians that few are strong and many are weak, one simply cannot place the same burden upon everyone.
... He quotes St.Paul No-one ever hates his own flesh but loves and cherishes it and gives the examples of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob fleeing death...
Finally Luther gives the most practical advice of all. People should prepare for their own death by listening to the sermon and attending the sacraments.

Thing is the paranoia today and hoard buying isn’t really because of a plague.
It’s due to the fear of what policies the government will implement.
People are hoarding because they think they’ll be quarantined, and businesses will be ordered closed and that since everyone is buying things up, scared of WARS or not, they know if food and goods are gone, they’re gone,no get up now even if they think this is overblown hype.
It’s sad and a bit scary how hysterical our society can become.
Imagine if there were an actual mass epidemic or event.
“food and goods are gone, theyre gone, so get it now even if they think this is overblown hype.
So the shelves are bare.
Come, my people, enter your chambers,
And shut your doors behind you;
Hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment,
Until the indignation is past.
Love, Fight, and die where you are at.
Heading for the hills is for elitist jokes.
If Christ were to show up in there safe haven mountain communities, they would probably treat him as an undesirable
and banish him.
It’s all collectivist horsemanure.. That’s right where the world is heading.
Some technological A.I. singularity is herding people into something nightmarish.
For the love of Christ and the tiny holy spark that still resides in us, fight against this illusion of fear, with everything you got, right where you are at.
What if it is? Do you think our governments would act or tell us any different?
Just sayin'...
Isaiah 26:[20] 20[20]
I believe technically we still don’t know what caused it. Not every scientist agrees.
“What if it is? Do you think our governments would act or tell us any different?”
Wouldn’t need the government to tell yes, we’d know because it’d be happening before our eyes. Not on tv.
[[Its sad and a bit scary how hysterical our society can become.]]
Well the thing is- government is taking over- and in some places placing curfews - people also hoard because the want to hole up in their homes while the virus is at it’s worse i n their communities, and want to stay away from others- as much as possible- to do that they think they need a few month’s worth of supplies- IF this gets a lot worse- and it could, then you’re gonna see the government really start clamping down on people- Like you say- fear of what the government might do during an epidemic is what drives them-
ISAIAH 26:20
Come, my people, enter your chambers,
And shut your doors behind you;
Hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment,
Until the indignation is past.
Amen.
We are just pilgrims passing through. In the world not of it.
We are also the salt and the light of the earth.
(I know I probably don’t live up to this latter part).
Who has? Go, and sin no more...:)
Martin Luther answered it.
Being replenished. A key difference between this country and those with the worst cases. (Along with obvious healthcare facility differences).
