A change might be anticipated in Francis' unlimited pro-migrant policy if Erdogan is able to bring sufficient pressure to bear on EU planners that they have to modify their open borders policy to be more like Hungary while continuing to crow the open borders line.

The default American Bishop is a "Tame", who will never stand up for the Catholic Church's teachings because protecting their comfortable sinecures is their primary motivation. The cancer of sexual blackmail of former seminarians who might have only once taken an indiscreet sexual action is so pervasive throughout the American Catholic body religious that it is the administrative foundation for the US Catholic Bishops' Conference. In this the American Catholic Bishops are firmly synchronized with Francis' totally populating his apparatchiks with former offenders who owe him their prosperity and freedom from prosecution.
There are a few faithful Bishops who quietly uphold the Church's teachings. "That no-good Texas toilet paper that won't take crap off of anyone" is Tyler TX Bishop Joseph Strickland, but the USCCB will eventually get rid of him.
The American Catholic Bishops firmly toe the immigration line of the Koch Brothers, the US Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable. But the AmChurch Bishops can never quite explain their failure to uphold the interests of low-wage African-Americans who are the primary victims of the Bishops' open-borders policy.

You can line up a thousand of the Syrians involved in this, and 99-percent will tell you that they want the ‘pass’ into Germany. I would guess the current community of Syrians in Germany to be near 700,000.
There is no gun pointed at the EU’s head. The EU has the physical ability to defend its borders and deport anyone it chooses to. That it refuses to do so is literally not Erdogan’s fault.
