Hamburg, Germany, Feb 4, 2020 / 11:01 am (CNA).- A court in Germany overturned Monday a school’s ban on niqabs, ruling that Hamburg law does not allow educational authorities to impose such a ban.

The niqab is a face veil worn by some Muslim women.

The Feb. 3 ruling by an administrative court come after a 16-year-old student was told she must expose her face to her teachers.

According to the court, the student has “a right to unconditional protection of her freedom of belief.”

Hamburg’s state minister for education, Ties Rabe, said in response to the ruling that he would seek to change the state’s law, and that “only if students and teachers have a free and open face can school and lessons function.”

The German state of Schleswig-Holstein recently failed to pass a ban on niqabs in universities and colleges, but Bavaria has had a similar ban since 2017.

European countries have moved toward banning niqabs and other religious garments in recent years.

A Dutch ban on wearing “face-covering clothing” in hospitals, schools, government buildings, and on public transit went into effect in August 2019. One law professor at a Dutch university suggesting it would be to the detriment of religion's role in the public square.

“a right to unconditional protection of her freedom of belief.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They may want to reconsider this as the killing of infidels and taking of sex slaves is part of their beliefs.
I hope the judges reap the benefits of their ruling by getting their heads sawn off someday.
When I saw the Saudi women in veils I was glad...I saw some of the umnveiled faces on occasion. My, my, my, all that inbreeding (first cousins marry) has produced the obvious result.
What about the beliefs of others that not being able to see someone’s face, means the person is unidentifiable and therefore a danger to those around them, and this violates the religious belief that everyone deserves to be safe and know who’s company they are in.
Seeing these idiots in their bags is truly unsettling. When I see them in society,it is the indication that Islam has planted the flag. Next will come the sword/AK.
You are right. I see the issue of face-covering as different from the other types of religious clothing or insignia such as crucifixes, kippas, star-of-david, turbans and so forth. Clothing and accessories are a personal identity statement -- and not for religious people alone, but for all sorts of people who like to signal "who they are" in public. MAGA hats too!
All of that is a matter of personal liberty.
Covering the face is an entirely different issue. I don't care if it's a niqab, a bandanna over the face or a Guy Fawkes mask. It disguises identity, and should not be allowed in public interactions.
Where is the German Cardinal Marx on allowing niqabs in the classroom?
He was all on board with banishing crucifixes from classrooms:
The cardinal and the cross
So it was no surprise when Bavaria’s move to put crosses in public buildings was met with denunciation. Cardinal Reinhard Marx, president of the German bishops’ conference, criticized the order as an act of cynical political manipulation, one that “has caused division, unrest and is pitting people against each other.”
