No, my church doesn't baptize people who are in plural marriages. And that's a fact.

It's a live issue in Africa, where Cathoicism has been growing exponentially. Back in 1900, Africa had just a couple million Catholics, less than 5% of the whole population. Today, there are 200m African Catholics, expected to double by the 2040s.

A lot of these people are converting from animist or Muslim-influenced cultures which practice polygamy. The Catholic Church forbids polygamy. A young male convert must not acquire a second wife. An already-polygamous man must separate maritally from all except the first wife, who will be his only one (he must still fulfill support obligations toward children by other women.)

It's a difficult thing: but it's a new life in Christ.

What would your church do?
