Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 103

Psalm 103

Of David.

1 Praise the Lord, my soul;
    all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2 Praise the Lord, my soul,
    and forget not all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit
    and crowns you with love and compassion,
5 who satisfies your desires with good things
    so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

6 The Lord works righteousness
    and justice for all the oppressed.

7 He made known his ways to Moses,
    his deeds to the people of Israel:
8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
    slow to anger, abounding in love.
9 He will not always accuse,
    nor will he harbor his anger forever;
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
    or repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13 As a father has compassion on his children,
    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
14 for he knows how we are formed,
    he remembers that we are dust.
15 The life of mortals is like grass,
    they flourish like a flower of the field;
16 the wind blows over it and it is gone,
    and its place remembers it no more.
17 But from everlasting to everlasting
    the Lord’s love is with those who fear him,
    and his righteousness with their children’s children—
18 with those who keep his covenant
    and remember to obey his precepts.

19 The Lord has established his throne in heaven,
    and his kingdom rules over all.

20 Praise the Lord, you his angels,
    you mighty ones who do his bidding,
    who obey his word.
21 Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts,
    you his servants who do his will.
22 Praise the Lord, all his works
    everywhere in his dominion.

How Good and Wonderful it is to Praise and Worship You,
Dear Father!
Thank You for these Words from Your Sweet Psalmist David,
a sinner like ourselves,
a man of war and diplomacy,
capable of of both great bitterness and also great love.
Thank You for letting us know,
That, in spite of his sins,
David was a "Man After Your Own Heart".
Thank You for preserving such Precious Inspired Song Lyrics,
Through Three Millennia,
Virtually Unchanged,
Despite Wars,
Schisms,
Challenges,
Heresies,
Burnings,
and Persecutions!

We Thank You for the Persistence and Stubbornness,
Which You have built into Your Chosen People,
Which has kept Them Alive to this Day,
in spite of the evil one's efforts to destroy Them.
Thank You for Your Promise to Preserve them Forever,
and to Restore Them to Their Land.
Thank You For Giving Us Your LAW
Through the Jewish People,
Which is the Foundation of Our Constitution,
Our Freedom and Liberty,
and all that is Decent in Western Civilization.

LORD, We ask that You fill the leaders of the USA with Your Spirit,
that they may make Holy and Righteous decisions regarding Israel.
Let us not be a part of the sea of gentile nations that turn against Your Beloved.
For the Sake of Your Anointed,
and For The Sake of Your Name,
we pray for the Peace of Jerusalem,
For Israel,
and For the Jewish People,
According to Your Word,
and Your Promise.

LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This Psalm seems to just lend itself to a musical setting. One of the most popular Contemporary Christian songs, 10,000 Reasons, by Matt Redman, is based on this Psalm, but it also has been interpreted by the late Gospel Singer Andrae Crouch.

It is also a part of the Eastern Orthodox Liturgy. It is VERY versatile!

The Psalm is framed by and Intro and a Coda, which say the same thing, "Bless (or Praise) the LORD, Oh my soul." Sometimes, we have to TELL our soul how to respond. It's easy to get discouraged in this world, and our souls, the seat of our emotions and thoughts, are most vulnerable to runaway thoughts, worries, fears, and what I call the "whatifs". A bad case of the "whatifs" can totally paralyze a person with fear and despondency. We have a tendency to Laundry-List the "whatifs" until they become an insurmountable roadblock to Faith, Action, Progress, and Growth.

Psalm 103 counters the "whatifs" with a Laundry-List of its own, which are the Benefits of the Lord:

1. He Forgives
2. He Heals
3. He Redeems.
4. He Crowns you with Love
5. He has Compassion
6. He Satisfies.
He Renews Your Youth

Those are Seven Benefits to YOU, the individual. To Israel, God Works Righteousness, Made Himself known to Moses, and was Gracious and Compassionate.

Then we have a list of things God will NOT do:
1. He will not always accuse us.
2. He will not harbor His anger.
3. He will not "give us what we deserve" (Thank Goodness!)
4. He will not repay us according to our iniquity.

Although this Song is not an Acrostic, it does have the same number of verses as the Hebrew Alphabet. This could be a mnemonic device to aid in memorization, or it could just be excellent songwriting. In any case, this Psalm is a sure cure for the "whatifs".

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
