Rector Abruptly Resigns Cash Rich, Member Poor Trinity Wall Street

The top clergyman at one of the wealthiest parishes in the U.S.-based Episcopal Church has abruptly stepped down. William Lupfer

The Rev. Dr. William Lupfer, rector of Trinity Wall Street Episcopal Church since 2015, announced his departure in a January 3 brief letter to church staff, first published by The Living Church.

Such an abrupt departure is highly unusual. Stepping down over a holiday break with no announced transition to an interim rector (Lupfer will be succeeded by church vicar Phillip A. Jackson, who will become priest-in-charge) indicates the departure decision was sudden. As of the morning of January 6, Lupfer’s name and photo had already been removed from the Trinity staff page.

“I have come to the decision to step away for a time, resign as Rector of Trinity, and enjoy some sabbath rest,” Lupfer wrote, noting that it follows “five years of intensive work” with vestry and other stakeholders.

Trinity holds billions of dollars in property and financial assets, dating to an early 18th century grant of Manhattan farmland from Queen Anne. In February 2019, the New York Times reported that the parish portfolio was worth an estimated $6 billion.

While not especially large in membership, the parish holds an influential role in the worldwide Anglican Communion. According to its web site, internationally, Trinity Church provides grants to dioceses, provinces, and seminaries within the global family of churches descended from the Church of England. Among those grants are funds provided to Anglican provinces in Africa to support their participation in gatherings friendly to the more liberal Episcopal Church.

Embezzlement? Child diddling? Boyfriend? Dissatisfaction with the policies of the Episcopal Church?

And shrinking every day due to their progressive/liberal leadership and ignoring the plain words of the gospel...

“While not especially large in membership...”

It’s no exaggeration to say that the entire Episcopal Church is supported by this one incredibly wealthy parish in lower Manhattan.

I’m a fundamentalist Christian. I considered attending the area Anglican church, but then they announced agreement with either homosexual priests or homosexual marriages...I forget which, and I could not have supported that.
BTW, 2 of the most powerful religious books every written (outside the Bible, of course), are “The Kneeling Christian”, and “How To Live The Victorious Life”. Both written about 100 years ago, by Anglican Vicar, Albert Richardson, and both free for download, online.
And if you’re traditional, you can download the 1912 version of “The Book of Common Prayer and Scottish Episcopal Liturgy”, from Gutenberg, for free. Such beautiful, scriptural prayers! Not like modern editions.

The Anglican Church in North America broke away from the Episcopal Church USA. In the beginning they were under African Anglican bishops to avoid the homosexual agenda.

Yes, I understand. That’s why I thought, at first, that the Anglicans would be ok, as I knew the Episcopalians had fallen over a cliff. It took awhile, but I guess the Anglicans finally followed over the same cliff. If I were Anglican, I would try to find a group that had resisted that cliff. I understand the African Church is still true, as are the African Methodists.

No but close. Trinity Church owns about 1/4 of Manhattan south of Canal Street. This real estate is covered with office buildings. The money it collects on ground rent is substantial.

Thank you my brother! I am a fundamentalist Anglican too. We were evicted from our church in Oatlands Virginia, where for over a hundred years we have worshiped. The graveyard is where our people are buried. The "Episcopal" took control and kicked us out.

Thankfully. we were able to raise the money to build a new Church. Thankfully to our late former Rector Eliga White, he endowed us with the land.

I’m glad your congregation found a way to remain faithful to God! As I read the books I mentioned in my last post, I thought, “Would that the Anglican church had remained as it was 100 years ago. It is terrible to see how far many denominations have fallen into step with worldly thought!”
Thank God He is faithful if we continue in the ways of His Word, His will.

Lupfer, what an appropriate name. Lup for “wolf” combined with Lucifer.
