Prelates trumpet administration's 'concrete actions'

WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) - In a rare move, a statement from the U.S. Bishops' Conference is speaking positively of President Donald Trump's administration.

January 16 is National Religious Freedom Day in the United States. Bishop George V. Murry, S.J. of Youngstown, Ohio, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Committee for Religious Liberty, issued an official statement the day before National Religious Freedom Day saying the following:

On this Religious Freedom Day, we are grateful that the right of religious liberty is cherished in this country. I appreciate concrete actions the Administration has undertaken, such as recent steps to protect faith-based social service providers. May we Catholics in America resolve to build on our inheritance for the good of all.

Bishop Murry referenced a Nov. 1 USCCB statement thanking "the Administration" for announcing a proposed rule that would keep taxpayer funding for faith-based adoption agencies who refuse to place children with homosexual couples.

What this boils down to is that liberals don’t want Mormons or Protestants in the tradition of Billy Graham or Roman Catholics in the tradition of John Paul II to be able to adopt children. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts prevented Catholic Charities from placing children into foster homes based on this premise. It is time to make this an issue.

SCHOOLS MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE TO THE CONSTITUTION. THE ADMINISTRATION’S NEW GUIDELINES WILL ENSURE THAT THEY ARE.
There’s a reason why the First Amendment comes first. Our country was founded upon the “first freedoms” it protects. The freedom to express ourselves — through speech, through the press, through assembly, through petition and through faith — defines what it means to be American.

And no American forfeits these freedoms — including the right to pray — to anyone or in any place, especially in public schools. The notion of “separation of church and state” is not an invitation for government to separate people from their faith.
