Gov Abbott, a Catholic, Draws Criticism Over New Refugee Ban from Texas' Catholic Bishops
ABC7 News ^ | 1/13/20 | Julián Aguilar

Texas’ Catholic bishops issued a sharp rebuke of Gov. Greg Abbott, a fellow Catholic, following his decision Friday to ban refugees from initially settling in Texas.

In a joint statement by the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops, which includes leaders from Texas’ 15 dioceses, the group called the decision “discouraging and disheartening.”

“While the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops respects the governor, this decision is simply misguided,” the group wrote. “It denies people who are fleeing persecution, including religious persecution, from being able to bring their gifts and talents to our state and contribute to the general common good of all Texans.”

"As Catholics, an essential aspect of our faith is to welcome the stranger and care for the alien," the statement said.

In response to the bishops' statement, Abbott spokesperson John Wittman said the governor's decision won't deny anyone access to this country.

"No one seeking refugee status in the United States will be denied that status because of the Texas decision," he stated in an email. "Importantly, the decision by Texas will not prevent any refugee from coming to America. Equally important, the Texas decision doesn’t stop refugees from moving to Texas after initially settling in another state.”

Ok, pay for it out of the collection plate. And I say this as a Catholic.

I think it’s okay to disagree here.

They could start a mission and go to Mexico and get killed by the cartels.

Hope Gov stands strong and helps bishops see where they are wrong in their thinking.

Sure help strangers and aliens/foreignors you come in contact with - but there are plenty of them here already legal and illegal help them assimilate if you must help existing illegals in USA.

stop trying to import more you foolish bishops it’s breaking the law.

so many churches do this feel good outreach but don’t follow through and it only adds to foreignors here that just become takers.

Fully agree. Instead, the Catholic church, as do the Lutherans, etc. receive taxpayer money to help with refugees. Taxes are paid under threat of going to jail for nonpayment. I do not believe they should be used for non-profits to provide services.

The Catholic Church should have been paying for the care and feeding of every Catholic who came toTexas illegally. It should never have been a responsibility of Texas payers. We don’t invite these lawbreakers to stay. The Catholic Church does.

Bad moves:
Evangelical Christianity Today sides against Trump. Helps his evil Dem opponents.

Catholic bishops side against Trump by aiding illegals who murder rape, rob, take resources intended for Americans (welfare, health coverage, surgical care, phone plan). Chaos causes Dems to say we need socialist government tightly controlling everyone. Prochoice groups will be prosecuted under racketeering laws again.

With help of such people, Dems win big. (God forbid).

Then....God fearing conservatives are disarmed, have freedom to worship taken away, churches are closed by militant atheists (as they did with LGBTQ against bakers) churches are taxed to ruin them. Anyone on record as connected with religion is prohibited from various elements of society such as hiring for certain jobs, banking, credit cards, mortgage approval, college entrance for children.

The taxation of churches and their income has already been proposed and the enthusiastic, passionate young socialists will soon get that approved like increased abortion rights.

Hope you’re satisfied, “religious” saps.

I forgot. When Bill O'Reilly was on Fox TV I remember that story now. He told a Kennedy offspring he was no longer giving what she called a "generous" annual contribution to their charity because Catholic Social Services encouraged illegals. Forgot that.

"... the decision by Texas will not prevent any refugee from coming to America. Equally important, the Texas decision doesn’t stop refugees from moving to Texas after initially settling in another state.”

That's got to be the weakest response I've ever heard.

He's essentially saying "I know it's bad and anti-Christian but don't worry, some other state will pick up the slack so I don't have to be principled and upset some of my base."

gwbush darling of so-called religious conservatives has facilitated buying clergy/religious leaders by allowing money going to so-called religious charities.

instead he should have stopped govt money going to any ngos(e.g. pp) also.

anything govt touches breeds corruption.

I put nothing into the collection plate. Not until they stop funding anti American activities

And it is absolutely against Catholic tech ing, per the catechism, to subvert national law. Which the bishops are doing

Greg Abbott is not only correct but he is bound by law to do his job as governor. Since when do liberals (the news media) care about elected officials adhering to their faith?

When are they going to say, Nacy Pelosi, a Catholic, draws ire from the clergy about her promoting abortion?

...well it would help if that were the case, which sadly, it is not

From the Internet
Mexicans sent home $26.1 billion from January to November 2017, according to figures released Tuesday by the central bank of Mexico. That's the most ever recorded and better than the $24.1 billion sent in 2016 over the same period. Barring a major setback in December, the total annual figure for 2017 is on pace to hit another record high.

=========================================

If this is all true the Mexicans shouldn't be in any trouble...if the greedy Mexican politicians and powerful families don't grab onto it first.

There would be NO CARTEL if it weren't for us gringos. The U.S. drug users are keeping the cartels FAT and HAPPY.
