2600 years ago the Jewish prophet Ezekiel predicted an unlikely coalition of Nations that would rise in the last days and make a push to control the Middle East and destroy the regathered Nation of Israel. Leading this coalition is the land to the extreme north of Israel, Magog. Current day Russia.
Ezekiel 38:2 "Son of man, set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him 3 and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am against you, O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal. 4 "I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them splendidly attired, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them wielding swords; [...] 7 "Be prepared, and prepare yourself, you and all your companies that are assembled about you, and be a guard for them. 8 "After many days you will be summoned; in the latter years you will come into the land that is restored from the sword, whose inhabitants have been gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel
After Noah's flood, Noah's grandsons of Japheth settled in the lands to the north and uttermost north of Israel. Genesis 10 (called the table of nations) and historians (1) reveal that the tribes of Magog (Southern Russia), Rosh (Northern Russia), Tubal (Tobolsk area), and Meshech (Moscow area) all settled in the Caucasus area. Note that Rosh is where we get the modern name, Russia (2). As late as the 8th Century CE, Japhethite tribes coalesced as the Eastern Slavic tribes led by the Varangian (Rus and Viking elites). Adopting Orthodox Christianity in the 10th century brought the tribes into the Byzantine Empire sphere of influence as the State of Rus. Rus suffered a number of fragmenting Islamic and Mongol invasions, but was reunified by the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the 15th century becoming the flag bearer of Orthodox Christianity after the fall of the Byzantines in Constantinople in 1453. It was affectionately calling "Holy Mother Russia".
Holy Mother Russia expanded greatly through the 18th century through conquest, and annexation to become the Russian Empire, the third largest empire in history stretching from Poland to Alaska. However, inept leadership, anti-semitism, and a corrupt Church Clergy led to the atheistic Russian Revolution of 1917 spawning the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). The Russian led Soviet Union played a decisive role in World War II and emerged as a superpower to rival the United States by virtue of its size. Interesting note...Soviet Russia was extremely close to invading Israel in 1973 by intervening in the Yom Kippur war, but was warned by a beleaguered outgoing Richard Nixon that any incursion against Israel would me met with a full scale response (3).
The Soviet era ushering in a disastrous 70 years of crippling economic socialism and brutal atheistic anti-Christianity. Religious Russians were suppressed or killed. Soviets inhibited free market entrepreneurialism causing a distorted economy primarily dependent upon Oil and Gas. As Oil and Gas prices plummet, Russia plummets. Russia's Achilles Heel. Soviet Cold war adversaries, United States and Saudi Arabia, exploited this weakness through the 1980s, increasing the world's oil supply leading to the financial bankruptcy of the Soviet Union causing its dissolution (4).
Though not the empire of the past, Russia has emerged from financial ruin as one of the strongest nations militarily, being recognized as one of five nuclear weapons states and possessing the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Russia's economy has recovered somewhat and ranks as number 11 in the world because of its vast natural resources. It is still one of the leading producers of oil and natural gas globally.
So why would Russia Want to Destroy Israel? It does not want to be bankrupted again! While the global market for oil has always been competitive, oil producing behemoth Russia has been able to offset low oil prices with natural gas sales (primarily to Europe and Asia). Recently however, a new entrant into the Global Natural Gas market has become a existential economic threat to Russia: Israel. Israel's recent monster natural gas discoveries are predicted to produce more gas than Europe consumes annually and enough to meet growing Asian demand. Logically, as David Wurmser of the Jewish Policy Center wrote in Spring 2013 (5), "if Russia does not manage to gain controlling interests in Israel’s gas sector, Israeli exports will tread on its sacred interests...a strategic challenge which Moscow will answer..."
Amazingly, the Bible foretells that Russia will already be entrenched in the Middle East (Syria) and reveals the reason for this invasion...
Ezekiel 38:9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee. 10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought: 11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, 12 To take a spoil
Israel will not willingly give up their rights to the Tamar and Leviathan gas fields. So in order to save Russia from losing its market share in Europe and Asia, Russia must forcably take control of the natural gas fields off the coast of Syria. Their mediterranean naval fleet, troops, and foothold in Syria give them a strong launch pad to do so. However, Israel is the strongest military in the region and a Nuclear power. Russia is simply not powerful enough to attack Israel without a coalition of the willing. Enter the unlikely allies of Iran and Turkey, which I will talk about in the forthcoming articles. Once historic enemies, Russia is now Iran’s chief arms supplier and Turkey's main ally after the radical Islamic takeover by Recep Erdogan. Turkey has recently taken an about-face regarding its NATO membership and is looking north to Russia as ally and big brother.
What will become of this coalition? The Bible foretells the following...
Ezekiel 39:2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel: 3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand. 4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. 5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
Why does the Lord do this? The answer is three fold...
1. Show the world that He is God (Ezekiel 39:6)
2. Show Israel that He is the God of Israel (Ezekiel 39:7)
3. To pour out His spirit upon them (Jews) so they will look upon Him whom they have pierced (Jesus Christ) and mourn for Him, and say "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord". (Ezekiel 39:29, Zechariah 12:10, Matthew 23:39)

Magog is not Russia. More misinterpreting prophecy in bible to push a garbage agenda. Keep pushing this and maybe this wil make Rachel Maddow and the rest of the Democrat Russiagaters convert to some form of Christianity or something.
I provided links. Historians like Josephus and many Jewish Bible Scholars (and the ancient Greeks) knew Magog only as southern Russia (and Scythia-Ukraine). Prove me wrong, scoffer.
Did you fail history class? Russia came about as a people when Vikings came along and forgot to bring their females with them so they "married" the local Slavs who in the middle ages.
Maybe you can get Rachel Maddow to read the Bible with this line of false reasoning though so good luck.

Agreed, however they have a strong military tradition and some good officers. Which is why they need a coalition in order to accomplish their goals.
