November Devotion: The Holy Souls in Purgatory

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. As a reminder of our duty to pray for the suffering faithful in Purgatory, the Church has dedicated the month of November to the Holy Souls. The Holy Souls are those who have died in the state of grace but who are not yet free from all punishment due to their unforgiven venial sins and all other sins already forgiven for which satisfaction is still to be made. They are certain of entering Heaven, but first they must suffer in Purgatory. The Holy Souls cannot help themselves because for them the night has come, when no man can work (John 9:4). It is our great privilege of brotherhood that we can shorten their time of separation from God by our prayers, good works, and, especially, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

To Help the Holy Souls in Purgatory:

1. Have the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered up for them.

2. Pray the Rosary and or the Chaplet of Divine Marcy for them, or both.

3. Pray the Stations of the Cross.

4. Offer up little sacrifices and fasting.

5. Spread devotion to them, so that others may pray for them.

6. Attend Eucharistic Adoration and pray for them.

7. Gain all the indulgences you can, and apply them to the Holy Souls

8. Visit to a Cemetery

 

Litany for the Holy Souls in Purgatory

The just shall be in everlasting remembrance; 

He shall not fear the evil hearing.

V. Absolve, O Lord, the souls of the faithful departed 

from every bond of sin, 

R. And by the help of Thy grace

may they be enabled to escape the avenging judgment, 

and to enjoy the happiness of eternal life. 

Because in Thy mercy are deposited the souls that departed 

in an inferior degree of grace,

Lord, have mercy.

Because their present suffering is greatest 

in the knowledge of the pain that their separation from Thee is causing Thee,

Lord, have mercy. 

Because of their present inability to add to Thy accidental glory,

November Devotion: The Holy Souls in Purgatory

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Old Calendar: The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today the Church celebrates the memorial of the Presentation of Mary. The three feasts of the birthday of Our Lady, the holy Name of Mary and her Presentation in the Temple correspond in the Marian cycle with the first three feasts of the cycle of feasts of our Lord: namely, Christmas, the Holy Name of Jesus, and His Presentation in the Temple (February 2).

Presentation of Mary
"Sacred Scripture contains no text concerning the event commemorated in today's liturgy. For something of a historical background one may consult the apocryphal works, particularly the Protoevangel of St. James (ch. 4:1ff). After an angel had revealed her pregnancy, Anna is said to have vowed her future child Mary to the Lord. Soon after birth the infant was brought to the sacred precincts at which only the best of Israel's daughters were admitted. At the age of three she was transferred to the temple proper (7:2). According to legend, here she was reared like a dove and received her nourishment from the hand of an angel (8:1).

"In the East, where the feast, celebrated since the eighth century, is kept as a public holiday, it bears the name, 'The Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple'. It was introduced at Rome by a Cypriotic legate to the papal court of Avignon in 1371. In 1472, Sixtus IV extended its observance to the whole Church. Abolished by Pius V, it was reintroduced some years later (1585)."

• Meditate on the mystery of Mary's temporary dwelling in the sanctuary of the Old Covenant as a preparation for the approaching season of Advent.

• Locate the order of contemplative nuns closest to you and visit their monastery (you may want to request their prayers and you might consider supporting them financially), they are the privileged souls who, by the grace of their vocation, are even here below dwellers in the house of the Lord.

• Spend 30 minutes reading the Bible.

• Learn more about Mary in the Byzantine Liturgy and say one of the beautiful prayers of the Eastern liturgy in honor of Mary.

The Word Among Us

Meditation: Luke 19:41-44

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Memorial)

He saw the city and wept over it. (Luke 19:41)

Today’s Gospel makes it clear that Jesus experienced the full range of human emotions. He didn’t just comment on Jerusalem’s lack of faith, and he didn’t just make his disapproval known by reciting a list of indictments. He shed tears of deep sadness over the state of the holy city. Many of his own people wouldn’t accept him as the Messiah. Jesus had come to share with them “what makes for peace,” but they rejected him (Luke 19:42). He could see that by remaining in their sin, they were bringing disaster upon themselves and their Temple. And that made him weep.

In his mourning over Jerusalem, Jesus joined a long line of prophets who also lamented over God’s people. Elisha wept when he saw that the king of Aram would destroy Israel (2 Kings 8:11-12). Nehemiah wept when news reached him of the desperate state of his people in a burned-out Jerusalem (Nehemiah 1:4). And Jeremiah, known as “the weeping prophet,” shed bitter tears “over the great destruction which overwhelms . . . my people” (Jeremiah 14:17).

It’s not just Jesus or the ancient prophets though. Many of us have wept over someone who has lost their faith. Maybe they see no need for God, or doubt his mercy, or are angry with him. Whatever the cause, their suffering pierces our hearts, and we grieve for them. We want nothing more than for them to taste the peace and mercy that we know.

How comforting to know that Jesus weeps with us! He longs for their healing and reunion even more than we do. That’s who Jesus is. Look what happened after his lament of Jerusalem. He continued to preach and teach and offer his mercy to every person who was willing to accept him. Then he gave his very life on the cross for our salvation.

Day after day, God continues to reach out to his children. Every day is a new day of his visitation. Every moment, he offers your loved ones—and you—a fresh opportunity to return to him. And he will never stop.

Luke 19:41-44

As Jesus drew near Jerusalem, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If this day you only knew what makes for peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides. They will smash you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

Introductory Prayer: Lord Jesus, many times I have overlooked your love in the circumstances of my life. I know you are always present, even if I don’t feel your love. This time of prayer is an opportunity to show you my love, and I truly desire to bring you consolation as you so often bring consolation to me.

Petition: Heavenly Father, help me to stand firm amidst the vicissitudes of life.

1. “As for Me and My Household, We Will Serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). The beauty of this life is that it offers us so many options. We have all been given the grace of free will, and we can choose to do many things. We can choose where we would like to work, where we want to vacation, who our friends are, what we are going to do this very moment. But the most important choice we make in life is to decide whether to love and serve God or to deny him. God’s greatest, natural gift to us is free will, and with it we direct our own destiny. What a truly beautiful soul who chooses to spend his life serving God! Clearly opting for God and his ways gives direction to a person’s life and provides clarity in moments of darkness and trial.
2. The Time to Prepare for a Storm Is Now: The worst time to clean out the gutters is in the middle of a thunderstorm. And that roof would have worked a lot better had it been fixed before a week of rain. The concept of being prepared is so hard for us human beings. Christ told his disciples, “Watch and pray, that you may not undergo the test” (Matthew 26:41). He was saying, “Be prepared. You never know when temptations or tough times are going to strike.”
3. Holding the Fort: The spiritual life is a lot like a castle. A castle has its strong points and its not-so-strong points. It has a moat, high stone walls and turrets, but it also has a gate made only of wood. Each of us has one or two things that can be likened to that wooden gate. We all have our weaknesses, but do we know what those weaknesses are? One of the keys to being able to resist sin is self-knowledge. If we know ourselves, we can avoid putting ourselves in compromising situations. We can use our strong points to fight the enemy and fortify those areas that are the weakest. In the end, the strongest weapon we have both to resist and to fight is our dependence on the Lord—our prayer and fidelity to his will!

Conversation with Christ: Jesus, I don’t want to base my life just on feelings and on what makes me happy. I want to live for you, to take a risk for you.

Resolution: I will start a constant prayer life by praying the Rosary every day this week.

Homily of the Day

November 21, 2019

Luke’s Gospel describes Jesus still approaching the city when he weeps over it and prophecies its destruction. He weeps because he loves the city and the people, but it will be totally destroyed by its enemies and the people with it. He is going to enter the city with the Jews rejoicing because they think their king is ready to take his kingdom and save them from oppression. What they don’t know is that Jesus will be rejected by the authority of Rome, humiliated and sentenced to death on the cross. And so their hope will be dashed. “For he who has given himself to us is going to be delivered into the power of men.”

However, we never think this way for Jesus. Our faith is built in human nature and spirit, but it has never been tested. It is important to live our faith or we need to practice it throughout our lives and that our actions reveal it into the world. “The world will be recognizing us by our action.”

Let us pray for all human beings. Our mission as believers is also to pray for those who do not yet believe. Let us be light or candle in this world. Jesus is Love. He gave up his life first and left us a trail to follow so that we may find our way home. Jesus, lead us on to LOVE.

"Coming within sight of the city, [Jesus] wept over it and said: 'If only you had known the path to peace this day; but you have completely lost it from view!' " �Luke 19:41-42

Jesus wept over Jerusalem because it had not known "the path to peace" (Lk 19:42) and would be destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. Because Jesus "is our Peace" (Eph 2:14), not to know the path to peace is to not know Jesus. Jerusalem was destroyed because it failed to recognize the time of Jesus' visitation (Lk 19:44). We likewise will be at peace or be destroyed � depending on whether we recognize Jesus as Lord, Savior, and God.

Jesus is a Sign of contradiction (Lk 2:34) and a stumbling Stone (1 Pt 2:8). If we accept Jesus on His terms, we will live the abundant life (Jn 10:10) of love and enter into the perfect peace of eternal life. But if we do not accept Jesus, we will not only be destroyed but damned forever (see Jn 3:18).

Consequently, let us accept Jesus as our Peace, Lord, Savior, and God. Let us not stumble over the cross but recognize it as the hope of the world, for Jesus makes "peace through the blood of His cross" (Col 1:20). Let us tell as many people as possible that the crucified Jesus is our only Peace. In this way, we will be peacemakers in the greatest way (Mt 5:9).
