As I recall millions of dollars were pledged immediately after the fire for the Catholic church to rebuild. Why is any government entity involved at all?
Cathedrals in France are property of the State. The 1905 law of separation of Church and State declared that all cathedral be the property of the State while the smaller churches remain property of the local municipal governments.
