I did not know until reading this, the effort made to prevent translation of the bible.

In the east, the Bible had always been translated into local languages. Only in the Latin West was there any such prohibition.

See Sts. Cyril and Methodius, for example, who created the Slavic alphabet --- the Cyrillic alphabet -- in order to provide the Slavs with Bibles and liturgical texts in their own language.

Syriac Christians read Syriac (Aramaic) Bibles. Greeks read Greek bibles. To this day, Orthodox Christians worship in their own local language, as they always have.

The Reformation and all its intrigue is a local story involving the Latin Church in conflict with Germanic peoples.
