We have some friends that are LDS.

In listening to them, it sounds more like the organization is morphing into classic “Southern Baptist” based on the language used to describe recent (and many) changes.

I would note Christian churches all over the land, no matter the version served up, are bleeding membership in greater numbers each year. Young folks especially want nothing to do with “organized religion”.

YMMV

We are witnessing one of the two meanings of the great departure written of by Paul in 2 Thess 2. The othere reading of the term will be a physical departure of ALL believers since Pentecost.

2 Thess 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means, for the Lord cometh not, except there come a departing first, and that that sinful man be opened, the son of perdition [Tyndale Bible] 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: [g]for that day shall not come, except there come a departing first, and that [h]that man of sin be disclosed, even the son of perdition. [1599 Geneva Bible]

The Geneva Bible particularly aligns with what follows where Paul addresses the one Who hinders the man of sin being revealed. Departing from the faithing in Christ is one meaning; the one hindering lawlessness via indwelling believers is another meaning, and is more supported by the text which follows verse 3.
