The ancient idea of the scapegoat meant the goat would take on the sins of the people and be driven out into the desert. Does the plant take on the sins of the person who confesses to him/her/it? If it is a potted plant, it could then be taken out to the desert and left to die. Of course if a wild animal ate it first then the animal would carry the sins.
