Diocese of Rochester first to file after Child Victims Act

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (ChurchMilitant.com) - The diocese of Rochester, New York, where the famous preacher and writer Bp. Fulton Sheen once served as the local ordinary, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy Thursday.

The Child Victims Act, which went into effect in New York Aug. 14, allowed for dozens of alleged clergy sex abuse victims to sue the diocese of Rochester, worsening the diocese's debt/asset ratio.

The 32-page Chapter 11 filing shows that the diocese estimated that its liabilities outweigh its assets:

* Estimated assets: between $50 million and $100 million.

* Estimated liabilities: between $100 million and $500 million.

* Estimated creditors against diocese: between 200 and 999.

The apparent creditors appearing in the Chapter 11 filing include alleged victims of clergy sex abuse, Catholic Charities in different countries, insurance companies, attorneys and landscaping companies.

Basically a feeding frenzy now. Practically anybody in their mother can step up sue accuse. And the church since it has such a bad reputation already has no choice other than to give them an automatic payday. Of course they still get a hit worsening their rep even more.

The law recently enacted in New York was designed to bring the Catholic Church to its knees and to fantastically enrich lawyers, who almost always donate to the Rat Party.

I guess they will be more like Jesus Christ when this is finished. walking wearing sandals with vows of poverty.

Actually they should be in Jail. Those that committed the evil acts and those who covered them up

There was a reason you used to not be able to sue charities; because it was all donated money; and if you took all the charity’s money, it could no longer function (and the rest of society would suffer).

We changed that, which is too bad. “The power to tax is the power to destroy.” Also, “the power to sue is the power to destroy.”

“We changed that, which is too bad.”

What’s “too bad” is the fact that the RCC in America spent decades covering up for child molesting monsters. Had they not done that none of this would be happening.

I seem to remember a Priest always started mowing the lawn and the volunteers would show up...

Much the same as whichever Priest ‘needed’ a new car, miraculously won the raffle for the new car at the annual fair. (IF a car was even available)

Of course in the 50s all the ‘scandals’ basically involved a Priest getting to ‘close’ to a female parishioner and of course, partaking in to much ‘wine’...

In the good old days, charities did charitable work instead of amassing $100 million in assets.

Of course, if you are ever in Galveston, be sure to visit the Bishop’s Palace from the 1890s. Of course, the bishop’s palace in Wurzburg is even more impressive. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C3%BCrzburg_Residence

Where have NYS state AGs been...?

Why is civil court the only place where victims can go for redress?
