Iceland has a notably not-western-values family and marriage system. If ya go to Wikipedia and read about their ‘surname’ conventions and their concept of marriage, you’ll kinda go “huh?” It’s not like us.

Iceland also has mapped the genome of virtually every family on the nation island. Back in the early 2000s Iceland was used a lot in genetics based drug discovery efforts - looking for disease markers in chromosomes to find targets for proteins for new ‘drugs’ and other treatments. Turned out to be unremarkable given the genomics knowledge of the day.

Point being, they are population-wise at risk of mild in-breeding, and their incidence of birth defects could be high. I DO NOT know for sure. They *may* be culturally used to ‘different outcomes’ for newborns or pre-borns. I don’t know.

Just food for thought/ rambling.
