Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Ruins of Megiddo, Northern Kingdom

(Old Testament)

2 Kings 17

Israel Exiled Because of Sin

7 All this took place because the Israelites had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of Egypt from under the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They worshiped other gods 8 and followed the practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before them, as well as the practices that the kings of Israel had introduced. 9 The Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their God that were not right. From watchtower to fortified city they built themselves high places in all their towns. 10 They set up sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree. 11 At every high place they burned incense, as the nations whom the Lord had driven out before them had done. They did wicked things that aroused the Lord’s anger. 12 They worshiped idols, though the Lord had said, “You shall not do this.”[b] 13 The Lord warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers: “Turn from your evil ways. Observe my commands and decrees, in accordance with the entire Law that I commanded your ancestors to obey and that I delivered to you through my servants the prophets.”

14 But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors, who did not trust in the Lord their God. 15 They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them, “Do not do as they do.”

16 They forsook all the commands of the Lord their God and made for themselves two idols cast in the shape of calves, and an Asherah pole. They bowed down to all the starry hosts, and they worshiped Baal. 17 They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced divination and sought omens and sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.

18 So the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence. Only the tribe of Judah was left, 19 and even Judah did not keep the commands of the Lord their God. They followed the practices Israel had introduced. 20 Therefore the Lord rejected all the people of Israel; he afflicted them and gave them into the hands of plunderers, until he thrust them from his presence.

21 When he tore Israel away from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat their king. Jeroboam enticed Israel away from following the Lord and caused them to commit a great sin. 22 The Israelites persisted in all the sins of Jeroboam and did not turn away from them 23 until the Lord removed them from his presence, as he had warned through all his servants the prophets. So the people of Israel were taken from their homeland into exile in Assyria, and they are still there.

Thus begins the Story of the Exile, or at least, ONE of them.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Dear Father in Heaven,
Blessed Are You, Oh LORD,
Our God,
King of the Universe,
Ancient of Days,
Our Rock and Our Redeemer!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise,
For You Alone Are Worthy;
You Alone Are Holy;
You Alone Are Righteous and Just;
And You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham!
How Wonderful Are Your Precepts;
How Precious Is Your WORD!
How Eternal and Sure Are Your Promises!

1. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever;
With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.
2. For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever;
Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.”

Abba Father,
In a world of duplicity,
Your Faithfulness Abides Forever!

3. “I have made a covenant with My chosen,
I have sworn to My servant David:
4. ‘Your seed I will establish forever,
And build up your throne to all generations.’” Selah (From Psalm 89)

You have established Your Covenant With Your People.
Your Word Declares it.
We pray For Your People,
According To Your Word,
According to Your Will,
And According to Your Promise.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins of Our Own Nation as well,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lily Tomlin, the comedienne who got her start on the 60's TV show "Laugh-In", had a stock character of a little girl named "Edith Ann". Dressed in a flouncy little-girl dress, Edith Ann sat in a huge rocking chair that gave her the illusion of childhood, Edith Ann would muse on different subjects with a Little-Girl perspective. Although the character was not as memorable as Tomlin's "Felicia the Telephone Operator", there was one sketch that has stayed in my memory banks for over half a century.

Edith Ann is sitting in her big chair, looking very unhappy, as if she is serving a punishment. She sings a little song:

"Mommy didn't tell me that I shouldn't paint the kitty, so I did."

A more recent variation on this theme is the duplicitous George Costanza (Seinfeld) trying to weasel out of a horrible action when confronted by his boss:

"Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? If I knew that that sort of thing was frowned upon..."

There are some folks who would complain that the people of Israel were just "Doing what comes naturally" and that the "Old Testament God" was a big meany by allowing them to be conquered, exiled, and REPLACED by other people. That was genocide! That was displacement! That was "ethnic cleansing"! How were they to know that that was going to happen if they did such-and-such? After all, God never TOLD them NOT to do that stuff? Why didn't God SEND somebody to straighten them out before it came to that? Maybe God should have put His rules in writing, so that the people would at least KNOW right from wrong!

Well, ahem, He DID put it "in writing". It is called The Torah, The Law, or even as simple as The Ten Commandments.

"Well, what about the poor people who couldn't READ?"

Well, God took care of that too. He says "Hear, Oh Israel..." (Deut 6), implying that the Law is read to those who can't read it for themselves.

"Well, He shoulda SENT someone to straighten the people out IT'S NOT FAIR!"

And yet, God DID send someone. Elijah and Elisha were always on the king's ear, and later, such amazing Prophets as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, and Hosea are ALL mentioned in Scripture as warning the kings and the people.

There is also such a thing as "Natural Law" which is governed by conscience, something every human being has.

And so, the "Edith Ann or George Costanza" arguments just don't cut it.
