2 Kings 17

Hoshea Last King of Israel

17 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea son of Elah became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned nine years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him.

3 Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up to attack Hoshea, who had been Shalmaneser’s vassal and had paid him tribute. 4 But the king of Assyria discovered that Hoshea was a traitor, for he had sent envoys to So[a] king of Egypt, and he no longer paid tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore Shalmaneser seized him and put him in prison. 5 The king of Assyria invaded the entire land, marched against Samaria and laid siege to it for three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River and in the towns of the Medes.

How Hallowed,

to Span the Millennia,
To be Unfettered by Time and Space,
To Know The End from the Beginning
and the beginning from The End!
For it is You, Oh LORD,
Who designed the Galaxies with Your Compass,
And Mapped Out the Vast Reaches of Space
With Your Word and Your Omniscient Imagination!
Scientists tell us even the heavens are finite.
But YOU are Infinite!

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

During the late 50's and early 60's, I became a big fan of what has become known as "Peplum Films" or "Sword and Sandals Movies". The genre actually can be very broad, including movies about Ancient Greece, Rome, or Babylon, or even the Middle Ages, but could include Bible Stories, Greek Myths, or Medieval Heroes like King Arthur. They were originally a smaller genre of low-budget flicks made in Italy, dubbed into English, and featured the heroes of Greek Myth and Legend. My personal favorite at the time was "Jason and the Argonauts" with its "spectacular" special effects of a skeleton army fighting with swords.

At the same time, Hollywood was making epics like Spartacus and The Ten Commandments, so the "Sword and Sandals" trend was an attempt to cash in on the genre. We see this type of thing even today with the endless parade of CGI-heavy Superhero movies. There is nothing new under the sun.

The danger was, and still is, the tendency to lump Bible Stories into the "Sword and Sandals" category. Samson and Hercules become interchangeable legendary strongmen, Ulysses and Moses both lead their group on epic journeys, and Ezekiel's Vision becomes a UFO Sighting. To the Secular World, History is written by whoever is in power at the time, and the lines between fact and myth become blurred.

But, every once in a while, something wonderful happens. Just like when Heinrich Schliemann uncovered the ruins of Troy, stuff gets dug up in the desert which shatters the "Bible as Myth" way of thinking. (for centuries, people thought that the City of Troy was an invention of Homer for "The Illiad".

Today we read of the last king of the Northern Kingdom, and of his duplicity. Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, has had enough of this treasonous vassal, and takes a large number of people from the Northern Kingdom into exile.

Non-Biblical sources from the annals of the Assyrian Kings (who had their deeds carved in stone for us to discover) tell us that this was Shalmaneser V, who was either assassinated or died, and was replaced by Sargon II. Sargon II then boasts of subduing the Kingdom of Israel, taking over 27,000 into exile, and replacing the population with foreigners of his own choosing.

Tomorrow we will read about that very thing, but the Bible does something even better than the stone carvings of Assyria.

The Bible tells us, not only what happened, but WHY.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

For any who don’t know, that is the Arabic letter “N” (called “Noon”) which is the first letter of the word “Nazreehee”, or follower of the Nazreen. The other word for Christian in Arabic is pronounced “Masseehee”, meaning a follower of the “Masseeh”, the Messiah. These days the “noon” letter symbolizes the persecution of Christians in the region, much of which is a direct result of Obama / SOS Clinton policies that favored the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda affiliates. IMHO, rope is too good for either or the both of them and their minions.
