Stripped of their collars and cassocks, they went unnoticed in this tiny Midwestern town as they were escorted into a dingy warehouse across from an elementary school playground. Neighbors had no idea some of the dressed-down clergymen dining at local restaurants might have been accused sexual predators.
They had been brought to town by a small, nonprofit group called Opus Bono Sacerdotii. For nearly two decades, the group has operated out of a series of unmarked buildings in rural Michigan, providing money, shelter, transport, legal help and other support to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Catholic priests accused of sexual abuse across the country.
Again and again, Opus Bono has served as a rapid-response team for the accused.
When a serial pedophile was sent to jail for abusing dozens of minors, Opus Bono was there for him, with regular visits and commissary cash.

Even the most vile predatory pervert deserves a fair trial: Not for his protection so much as for the protection of the rest of us. Fair trials, due process, and the presumption of innocence are as much good for the innocent as they are for the guilty.
A den of rats.
Where was the support from the Catholic Church for Cardinal Pell?

Well ok then.
Yea, I caught that too.
Monsters.

However there seems to be something crooked about this organization in terms of fraudulent fundraising, private appropriation of funds (embezzlement) and shielding known predators (already convicted, or for whom "settlements" with victims have been made) from ongoing legal consequences.
This is the first I've read of this organization, so I don't have any means of comparing it with other, possibly contrasting accounts. But the testimony of the founder's daughter and former co-worker or employee, Mary Rose Maher, seems particularly damaging.
If what this article says and implies is true, it's disgusting and shameful, and they need to accept public exposure and criminal prosecution.
If it's NOT true, they need to defend themselves effectively for their own protection, and for the sake of justice and truth for individuals who have been wrongly accused..
The lack of support for Cardinal Pell was and is a huge injustice. I dare say it was and is the stuff of mortal sin.
My browser pukes every time I try to visit the Miami Herald, so I can’t read the whole article. The importance of fairness and honest due process doesn’t negate the possibility that evil people may misuse such to protect the guilty from the justice they deserve.
I’ve lived in rural Michigan. People are heavily armed, and have a strong sense of justice.
They had better hope their location remains a secret.
That very secrecy implies something underhanded.
I know Louisiana requires convicted sex offenders to publicly announce (publication of photograph and residence address in the newspaper of record) their presence in a community, and repeat the announcement if they change residences. Does not Michigan???
I wonder if they’re offering their services to Fr. Eduard Perrone.
Probably not.
