This is not about President Trump. It is about us. About our behavior as followers of Jesus. About our words. About our attitudes. About our priorities.
It seems that many of us have lost sight of what it means to be Christian, as if anything now goes in the name of Jesus.
It seems that many of us now justify almost any kind of ugly rhetoric, as long as it is in the name of country and of God, seemingly in that order.
What has become of godly speech? Of civility? Of graciousness? Of respect? When did God send out the memo that it was now fine for His children to savage one another, to act like animals, to be cruel and cutting and nasty?
Its one thing if the president sends out a tweet that I find objectionable. He is who he is, for better or for worse. And if he hasnt changed his style to date, Im not holding my breath. (Lets not forget that, from his perspective, his style got him into the White House. Why change now?)
Its another thing, though, when our comments sound like his, when we ridicule one another and degrade one another and insult one another. And we do this as followers of Jesus?
Of course, the moment I say this, I can hear the critics shouting, You are so spineless! You are so weak! Its because of wimps like you that we needed a man like Trump.
My response to each critic is this: Dont talk to me about weak. Dont talk to me about spineless. I have risked my life for Jesus (literally) while preaching the gospel overseas. I have lost everything in the past because I would not compromise my convictions.
Every day our websites are flooded with hateful comments, and I have a file filled with death wishes, along with the occasional death threats.
Its all because Im going to speak the truth no matter what, regardless of cost or consequences.
To repeat: Dont talk to me about being weak.
But there is a difference between being strong and being nasty, just as there is a difference between being gracious and being spineless.
Paul wrote, Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. (Colossians 4:56)
Sorry, but I didnt get the memo where God rescinded these verses. I didnt get the memo where He changed the fruit of the Spirit into the works of the flesh (see Galatians 5:17-24).
And the sword cuts both ways. I have seen Christians who are Trump critics bash other Christians who voted for him. You cant be a Christian if you voted for Donald Trump! You are an ignorant fool bringing mockery to Christs name.
And I have seen Christian Trump supporters brand anyone who would dare criticize a single thing he says or does as unAmerican and unChristian.
Have we lost our corporate minds? Have we lost our individual souls?
To repeat: Its one thing if the president launches a strongly-worded Twitter attack against Rep. Elijah Cummings or calls Omarosa Manigault a dog.
Its another thing if our Christian discussion of his tweets is just as mean-spirited, just as accusatory, just as nasty.
I recently had a friendly but spirited disagreement with Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson about the Omarosa dog tweets, with Rev. Peterson finding the tweets to be both truthful and Christlike. In my view, the president could have expressed his deep disappointment that someone one he trusted betrayed him, thereby creating sympathy for his position rather than alienating others unnecessarily.
I can point to black leaders who say the presidents tweets against Rep. Cummings were not racist and white leaders who say they were.
But, once again, this is not about the president.
It is about our responses and our words and our tweets and our comments.
All too often, as I interact with other believers, it seems as if patriotism comes first and Christian behavior second, as if its more important to show your allegiance to the flag than to walk in harmony with the Lord.
Earlier I mentioned the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. The former include enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, and divisions. The latter are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
As children of God, as followers of Jesus, we are called to demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit, especially to a watching world. We are expected to put to death the works of the flesh. Are we?
James (Jacob) wrote, Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls (James 1:1921). Perhaps we need to review verses like this?
Perhaps we need to remember Proverbs 15:1? It states, A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Whats strange (and unfortunate) is that some readers will respond to this article with a defense of Trump (who, to say it once more, is not the subject of this article). Others will accuse me of being unpatriotic because, they would argue, at critical times like this, nothing is more important than standing with Gods man in the White House.
To each of you who have already formulated your angry response, let me encourage you to read the article again, from beginning to end. But this time, do it with your defenses down and your mind wide open. (And for Trump supporters, remember that I get bashed from other critics for voting for him).
We are doing great damage with our words, hurting one another and making a mockery of the gospel to outsiders. And we are at the real risk of getting more caught up in a partisan political spirit than in the Holy Spirit.
Pauls words speak clearly to us today: But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another (Galatians 5:15).
Surely, we can do better.
The Constitution is not a suicide pact.
First we have to survive.
Yeah, the ugliness has been getting out of hand. Not interested in finger pointing on this one. There is blame to go around. Lord have mercy.
I am sometimes dismayed by Mr. Trump’s rhetoric (the style, not the substance), but...
I can and will vote for him with a clean conscience. I needn’t adopt his rhetoric to support his goals. Donald Trump is my president, not my clergyman.
First we have to survive.
Misdirected slogan - this article is not about the Constitution but the Word of God. Will you disobey the Word of God in order to survive?
This article misses what is happening. Totally.
The left loves it when Christians talk like this, not discerning the precipice we are hanging from.
Gentle Jesus, meek and mild is a fairy tale that the left loves to spin as they sow chaos and evil.
“Godly politics” is an oxymoron.
I’m a fan of breaking faces instead of turning the other cheek.
It is my opinion that broad brushing the Christian Faith causes many to be confused about what it is to be a follower of Jesus Christ. The Gospels do teach patience, forgiveness, repentance and many other elements of Love. If we are going to use the comments of President Trump as the base line of behavior then let’s also discuss Christ’s baseline. In the Book of Mark, we witness God through Jesus performing many many miracles showing compassion and love. However, with each healing came a lesson. We also see Jesus take on the leadership of that day with ruthlessness. These were the leaders of the Jewish nation who knew the O.T. and God’s provisions. They knew the difference between right and wrong. Nonetheless, they held the “common folk” to one standard and themselves to another. This disgusted Jesus and he nailed them every time. Even calling them snakes! Not just a snake but the most poisonous snakes (Asps). These leaders new better just like many leaders we have in Washington. They force the common people to live a standard they refuse to live. Example, Obamacare for us and private insurance for obama, congress, etc. Is Trump tough? Yes, he is but who is he tough against? That’s the issue we must observe.
I might, don’t try me.......
this guy wants us to talk nice?.......been there, done that.....it doesn't work to be nice......just ask G.W Bush what it got him...
Godly politics is an oxymoron.”
I hope that you are wrong FRiend. Because if I am given the choice of obedience to God or political activism, politics will lose every time. I have not reached the point where I think it has come down to that, yet. But I am not happy with where we as a country are. And I am not talking about policy. I am talking spiritually. The left is already lost. But we on the right have been making a lot of moral compromises of our own for the sake of worldly power.
Mark 8:36
Quoting scripture is not an offense or defense strategy.
It is a surrender strategy which only ends up one way.
You are dead.
This is historical going all the way back to 70AD in Jerusalem.
If King David ran for President ... a small percentage of believers would not vote for him because of adultery in his past ... yet God still considered him a man after His own heart.
Would The Lord God Almighty say that about any of us?
Trump is a Divine Being.
To support him is to both support America and Christ
Don’t be nice, be good. There’s a difference
Poor fellow. He misread the branding. Instead of "unAmerican" or "unChristian", he should've read the branding as "stupid".
Yes, there's a reason we usually say "God and country", in that order. The country is a realm subordinate to God's realm.
Critics (vocal ones) of Trump are stupid because they are ignoring the ideological context. We are in an ideological, worldview death struggle with marxists and their agenda. To throw in with them for any reason is to engage in the fray from the wrong side.
The author sounds like a pansified snowflake. Jesus himself used colorful language when it was necessary. Filthy rags, whitened sephulcres, etc...
“Surely, we can do better.”

Another Paul Ryan. Bow down to the left, surrender monkey.
