Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

2 Kings 8

The Shunammite’s Land Restored

8 Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the Lord has decreed a famine in the land that will last seven years.” 2 The woman proceeded to do as the man of God said. She and her family went away and stayed in the land of the Philistines seven years.

3 At the end of the seven years she came back from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and land. 4 The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and had said, “Tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.” 5 Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored the dead to life, the woman whose son Elisha had brought back to life came to appeal to the king for her house and land.

Gehazi said, “This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” 6 The king asked the woman about it, and she told him.

Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, “Give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.”

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

It is not clear chronologically whether this happened before or after the "Naaman Incident", because Gehazi is still Elisha's servant in this story.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Almighty and Eternal Father,
How Glorious and Wonderful You Are!
Your Magnificence and Perfection are Overwhelming.
And yet, even more-so,
Your Justice,
Your Righteousness,
and Your Profound Holiness!
For It is You Who Made All That Exists,
From the Mightiest Galaxies to the Tiniest Atom.
You Know Us Inside and Out.
Our Hearts and Thoughts belong to You.
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham,
and Indeed of ALL People.
Your Promises and Precepts are Eternal.
Your Judgments and Word are Forever True.
There is No Shadow of Turning With You.
You Are Faithful Even When We Are Not.
You ARE The Truth.
Let God be True, and every man be a liar.
Let others choose whom they may serve,
but as for me and my house,
We Shall Serve You, Abba.
And in serving YOU,
We Choose to Believe and Obey Your Word.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins of Our Own Nation as well,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

An interesting literary device, which works very well in film-making, is called "The Flashback". It is used very effectively in David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia", when the movie begins with Lawrence's fatal motorcycle accident (filmed extremely effectively from the viewpoint of the rider...I could actually FEEL IN MY GUT the front fork shimmy that led to the crash...been there, done that!) and then the movie switches from 1935 to 1914, as Lawrence is commissioned to lead the WW1 Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire. It is probably the best use of "Flashback" in any movie I've ever seen.

I like the device less when I am actually reading a book. I like the book to continue as a seamless narrative in chronological order. An attempt was made with Coppola's "Godfather Trilogy" to do just that with the three movies. The producers cobbled together the three movies, put the flashback childhood sequences in "Godfather II" at the beginning, the rise of Vito followed by Michael in the middle, and Michael's rise and fall at the end. In my humble opinion, it was a good move, but to this day I like the Childhood sequences in "II" the best.

So. What does this have to do with today's Passage?

At first reading, one may think, "Hey...there's that liar and thief Gehazi again! What's he doing still serving Elisha or having an audience with the king? I thought he was a LEPER!" And you would be right about that.

Then you might say, "Hey...what's this seven year famine they are talking about? Didn't they just have a SIEGE, and wasn't that just ended miraculously? and you would be right about that too.

The clue here is in the very first sentence. Look at the verb form:

8 Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the Lord has decreed a famine in the land that will last seven years.” 2 The woman proceeded to do as the man of God said. She and her family went away and stayed in the land of the Philistines seven years.

The word "had" changes the whole way this Passage should be read. It is a tense called the Plu-Perfect and changes the entire story into a FLASHBACK. The "plu-perfect" is not as prominent a tense in the English Language, but is very important in Latin and Greek. Greek even has a tense used for action verbs that are "ongoing and will continue" and makes New Testament Word Studies REALLY CHALLENGING.

Based upon the use of the plu-perfect in this particular verse, one can infer that the seven-year famine could have been previous to the siege, the "king" could have been anyone from Jehu to Joram, and that Naaman had not yet visited Elisha for his healing. All that from the word "had".

Motorcycle Sequence from "Lawrence of Arabia"

“You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"Elisha and the Shunammite Woman"
Gerbrand van den Eeckhout - 1649

. HEN spake Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the
land seven years.
And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of God: and she went with her household, and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.

And it came to pass at the seven years' end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land.

And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that Elisha hath done.

And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life, that, behold, the woman, whose son he had restored to life, cried to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life.

And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed unto her a certain officer, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.

Thanks for posting the KJV of this Passage! Looking at it, I can see that the plu-perfect is not as obvious in this translation than in some more modern ones. I know that the KJV was translated directly from the Hebrew (Textus Receptus) but I am not sure if the Elizabethan “spake” is the same verb tense as the modern English “had spoken”. I wonder what the Septuagint (Greek) has for the verb. (That is going to take some SIGNIFICANT study on my part! LOL!)

Thank you, left that other site! I can’t remember the last time I’ve heard someone discuss the Plu-Perfect tense. :)

Your little grammar lesson returned me to my school years. It was so much fun analyzing a sentence structure. For me it was in Italian and Latin, always loved that part of instruction.

Adding my prayers, as always. God bless.

I loved diagramming sentences! Most kids hated it, but I liked it because I got to DRAW LINES. :-)

Do they even do that anymore in school?

Doing the Thread gives me a thirst to find out more!

For example, today's Passage inspired me to remember my Latin Grammar, and also to look up Lawrence's Motorcycle. Here's what I found out:

Compared to my Bike, which I ride every day:

Lawrence's Bike had a 998cc Engine in a V-Twin configuration. Mine has a 1340cc engine in the same configuration. Even my old Sportster (1100cc) had a bigger engine.

Lawrence's Bike was called the SS100 because it guaranteed a Top Speed of 100mph. I pushed Blue (my bike) to 120 on Rt 64 in Virginia because it was arrow straight and there were no other vehicles on the road. Then the forks did that little shimmy-shake and I backed off. That was probably in 1995. I am older and presumably wiser now. So is Blue. I don't think she could do it nowadays.

The Brough Superior SS100 had a three-speed gearbox with a manual shift lever. Blue has five speeds and is operated by my left foot.

Both Bikes have the same type of Front Forks designed by Harley Davidson. Maybe that is why the scene from "Lawrence of Arabia" is so compelling.

Here is the major life-and-death difference though:

I ALWAYS wear my Helmet, even if not mandated by the state in which I am riding.

Lawrence, obviously, did not.

I think now it is still up to the teachers. There was talk of eliminating it and instead encourage children to read more.
