Nothing new. In the past, the Catholics merged with the festival of Saturnalia (Christmas), pagan goddess Eostre (Easter), the Gaelic festival Samhain (Holloween), the Feast of Lupercalia (Valentines day), Odin’s day (Ash Wednesday).

Especially amusing/annoying are the cases where the pagan traditions do not predate the Christian/Jewish ones yet are attributed to be the source of Christian traditions.
