*Roman Catholic* is used many times by Catholics themselves with no sense of it being an insult.

Rather in the Buffalo area it's to distinguish between Roman Catholicism and Ukrainian Catholicism. It's also used by Catholic churches themselves, which a goole search will show up very quickly.
