Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today we are introduced to one of the mightiest prophets in the Bible. Unlike the great prophets that have their own Books named after them, Elijah's story is incorporated into the Books of Bible History. That is fitting because he appears on the scene during a huge crisis, and his ministry is closely associated with the wicked King Ahab and his heinous wife Jezebel.
Elijah was from Tishbi in Gilead. The exact location of Tishbi is unknown, but Gilead was on the east side of the Jordan. It was a bit of a trek to the palace of Ahab, but Elijah heard the call of God, and obeyed.
Although Elijah never wrote a Book of his own, his story is so powerful that it has become enshrined in our culture. I often quote "Moby Dick" in my writings, because that is one of my favorite pieces of American Literature. We all know that the name "Ahab" was used for the obsessive, vengeful, lunatic Captain of the Pequod. The sailor Ishmael (another Bible name) remarks to the Quaker Shipmaster that it was strange that the Captain would be named after a wicked king in the Bible. The Shipmaster replies that the captain didn't CHOOSE his name, so it didn't mean anything. Of course, it turned out that it DID mean something. The Captain was "given over to a strong delusion" an idolatrous quest for vengeance, and he dragged his whole crew into it with him. When First Mate Starbuck tried to get Ahab to repent of his folly, Ahab's response was:
"There is One God over heaven, and one captain of the Pequod!"
Ahab was clearly blaspheming, stating that HE was the "god" of his little storm-tossed ship.
Ishmael, seeing all this, was reminded of a raggedy wretch of a man he met on the pier right after he signed onto the voyage. The man was obviously crazy, like the beggars on a street corner. But he warned Ismael that the voyage would lead to the deaths of all on board save one. The author chose to give this raggedy prophet a name. It was Elijah.
Another note on Bible names and how they became part of our culture is the name of the wicked queen, wife of Ahab. Of course, Ahab was quite capable of being evil all by himself, but Jezebel made him even worse, if such a thing could be imagined. She was a devotee of Baal, a fertility idol. Fertility gods were famous for their "ceremonies" which included some really bizarre sexual practices. They were also responsible for rain, because rain makes things grow. "Jezebel" has become an epithet in our language for an evil, sexually promiscuous, and manipulative woman. The movies and books about a "Jezebel" are numerous, and the wicked queen's name will be with us forever in this context.
And so, Elijah embarks upon a journey that will bring him face-to-face with Ahab, Jezebel, and Baal. The first thing he does is "turn off the water", and Baal, who is supposed to be in charge, can't turn it back on!
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

Isaiah 29:5-8 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
5 But the multitude of your [enemy] strangers that assail you shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the ruthless and terrible ones like chaff that blows away. And in an instant, suddenly,
6 You shall be visited and delivered by the Lord of hosts with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a devouring fire.
7 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel [Jerusalem], even all that fight against her and her stronghold and that distress her, shall be as a dream, a vision of the night.
8 It shall be as when a hungry man dreams that he is eating, but he wakens with his craving not satisfied; or as when a thirsty man dreams that he is drinking, but he wakens and is faint, and his thirst is not quenched. So shall the multitude of all the nations be that fight against Mount Zion.
