The voiceover goes on: “It was not to be long until the Sankt-Gallen group got a new chance, because unexpectedly, Pope Benedict resigned."

Unexpected to say the least.

The last time a Pope resigned was 700 years ago. That Pope never wanted to be Pope but was more or less drafted. He resigned when it became more or less self-evident that he was not suited for the job.

Pope Benedict is not such a person. Was it unexpected to everyone?

No. He explicitly hinted at it several times pretty early on in his pontificate.
