Rome’s ‘Festival of Peoples’ Celebrates Diversity Amid Anti-Immigrant Backlash

ROME - It’s become a staple of Francis’s pontificate to use words and events to indirectly send a message to nationalists and populists that when it comes to immigration the Church has no intention of backing down.

Whether Francis is criticizing those who prefer to build walls instead of bridges, carrying immigrant children on the popemobile after his audience, or meeting with evicted Roma people his point is clear, and a multicultural event in Rome this Sunday might be the latest message the pontiff sends to the anti-immigration camp.

The Festival of Peoples wishes to offer an important witness of civil cohabitation between different peoples,” said Father Pierpaolo Felicolo, director of the Migrants office of the Diocese of Rome, in a May 15 interview with local media.

“Through the years, the city has learned the beauty of being together and we must still commit to abandoning all clichés that exist surrounding immigration and let the normality of the encounter between different cultures emerge,” he said.

On May 19 hundreds of representatives from different countries and cultures will gather at Rome’s St. John Lateran cathedral to celebrate the 28th edition of the “Festival of Peoples.” The theme this year will be “In the Common Home, One Human Family,” drawn from a speech by Francis during the interreligious meeting in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Feb. 4.

The daylong event is promoted by the Migrants office of the Roman diocese and the local Caritas, in collaboration with other Catholic and non-Catholic organizations that work on immigration.

It takes place as the relations between the Vatican and the ruling populist coalition in Italy have been strained. The de facto leader of the Italian government, Matteo Salvini, has enacted tough policies to restrict immigration and legal access to the country while using even......

I did a little calculation awhile back. Based on population density, Vatican City should be able to accept between 3000 and 4000 immigrants. And there is room in the Vatican Gardens for high-rises to house them.

So how many immigrants has the Vatican City accepted thus far? 4000? No. 400? No, again. From what I can find online, it’s only been a handful. Certainly less than 40. That’s less than 1% of what they could accept.

So with all due respect, shut up Pope! If you can’t come near to practicing what you preach, you are a hypocrite. Just shut up.

The colonizing cultures are not tolerant of Jews and Christians in their homelands. If they want to cone to the West for a better life, walk away from Islam.

The vatican is one sq. mile with a national population of 800. I think your figures are off.

I think my figures are right. But I am always ready to stand corrected. Here’s what I’ve got.

New York City: Population density is 27,000 people per square mile.
Vatican City: Population density is 5,000 people per square mile.

So the Vatican City could grow in population x5 and still be less dense than New York City.

The current population of Vatican City is roughly 1000 people. But they could handle five times that, or 5000 people. So they have room for 4000 more people.

It’s worth noting that Vatican City is much richer than NYC is. And it’s also worth noting that should even one person stay in Vatican City illegally, the Swiss Guard would remove that person pretty damn fast.

May 19th is the Feast Day of Pope St. Celestine V (in the traditional Catholic calendar), the first pope to have resigned the papacy, albeit he was a holy man who was later canonized.

May Pope Francis follow suit for reasons totally unrelated to St Celestine’s.

By the way,

St. Peter's Square in Vatican City is open to the public during the day. I'd love to see a family of peaceful Muslim immigrants enter the Square, then set up house. Put some tents up. And maybe build a fire and roast some kebab.

I wonder what would happen. As I see it, there would be two possibilities:

1. Pope Francis would stop by, and bless the family. And true to his preachings, he'd invite that family to bring in more of their relatives.

2. Or maybe Francis would not show up. But the Swiss Guard would. And that Muslim family would become acquainted with the business end of a pike.

I'm guessing that possibility #2 would happen. And that would make Francis a filthy, shameless hypocrite.

...Diversity is an anti-religion, and anti-ideology, a nepotism which promotes everything except one's own family.

Diversity therefore equals the destruction of any and all religions and of all positive ideologies.

Because Diversity can only be destructive: whatever IS is insufficiently or inexactly diverse.

Whatever IS must therefore be destroyed in order to make it MORE Diverse.

And there is no conceivable or measurable end to it. Yesterday's Diversity is today's intolerable lack of Diversity.

Diversity is the destruction of Good; and it is the destruction of all types of Good - however defined. All are chewed up and spat out by Diversity.

Diversity is the promotion of chaos by the destruction of Good; and then there-naming of chaos as Good.
