While it is true Catholics selectively chooses who is to be considered a so-called early church father and from among there teachings, and restrictively invokes the "unanimous consent " (as in the Vatican 1 Decree that one cannot receive and interpret the Scripture except according to the unanimous consent of the fathers) despite not meaning full agreement, yet both sides must be wary of quote-mining from them (and from Luther), for what they express in one place may not seem consistent with what they say in another, if not necessarily contradicting it
Meanwhile their uninspired writings testify to the progressive accretion of beliefs that are foreign to the NT church in the light of the only wholly inspired Scripture is fit to be determinitive of what the NT church believed. Thanks be to God.
