PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"Jonathan Tastes of the Honey"

James J.J. Tissot (1836-1902)

_
the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.

And all they of the land came to a
wood; and there was honey upon the ground.
And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.

But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.

Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?

And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.

And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.

Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.

And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.

And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.

And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.

And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.

And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.

Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.

And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.

And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.

And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.

Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.

So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I don't know if I ever promised you that there would not be Math on this thread. But, today being 3/14, I thought I might share with you some thoughts about God related both to today's scripture and the quality of "pi"."Pi" is a mathematical constant used to calculate the circumference of a circle. It has fascinated scientists since the time of the Ancient Greeks. It is fundamentally related to EVERYTHING, from the atom to the Galaxy. It is important in Art, Architecture, Transportation, Science, Astronomy, Physics, and just about everything else. "Pi" is rounded off to 3:14 but it actually extends to Infinity, and, as far as I know, no scientist has been able to calculate the end of it. There was a quirky movie about a recluse genius who DID find the end of "Pi" and he ended up being chased by Kabbalists, The Mob, a Wall Street contingent, The FBI, The CIA, and nearly everybody else. Whoever held the secret of "Pi" would wield unimaginable power.

The concept of "Pi" is a great mystery that relates to our own Awe and Respect for the Almighty. First of all, "Pi" is Infinite, and no amount of learning is going to change that. Scientists have "cut it back" to 3.14159, but that is just for convenience. They KNOW that had to cut it off SOMEWHERE, and so they agreed that this is how they would express it. When we put limits on God, we are not limiting HIS Power, but just limiting our own relationship with Him. As the Evangelist John said,

25 Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written. (John 21:25).

When Isaiah saw the Angels singing around the Throne of God, he heard,

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

The Psalmist Declared:

(Psalm 19:1) “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.”.

Like the concept of "Pi", God is beyond our calculations, yet He Is. His Creation, spread out over the Universe, is so vast that we have to make up new words to describe it, like "Light year", "Parsec" and "GM/c2" (which is the mathematical formula for figuring out the dimensions of a Black Hole). And, oddly enough, most of creation is ROUND, ans stated in both Job and Isaiah.

Now, let's look at today's reading again. Saul, in his hubris, forces his army to make a stupid vow that they will not eat anything before going into Battle. (This was of course, centuries before Napoleon said that an army travels on its stomach!). They fought in a weakened state because of this. Meanwhile, Jonathan, who had not heard about the vow, ate some honey on the way to the fight, and was strengthened by it. He won a victory as a result, but now was in deep trouble. The vow carried a curse that whoever broke it would be put to death! Only the reaction of the soldiers, and Saul's own repudiation of the vow saved Jonathan's life.

How many times do people say, "If I do THIS, then God is going to have to do THAT"? Hasty vows made with disastrous consequences are a result of that kind of thinking. Unfortunately, this event does not cure Saul of trying to act like a High Priest, and that will result in the end of his reign as King of Israel.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Hmm. Your thoughts on why God didn’t answer Saul?

Saul was taking this “king” thing too seriously. Not only did he think he was the Political king of Israel, he thought he could be the Spiritual king as well.

God was merciful in allowing Saul to “recind” his stupid vow.

Just my thoughts.

Kate Bush - one of my favorites - has an interesting song called “Pi”, which would have been more so had she let it tail off into infinity, and not flubbed a digit somewhere out around the 20th decimal place. Though it’s still a beautiful song.

The Lord be with You and Yours....

I will look up that song. As someone who has engineered audio recordings, I can tell you that “trailing off to infinity” is the easiest way to end a song.

So maybe Kate Bush was bucking a trend. :-)

Anything is possible.

Interesting there’s a measurement for Pi (rounded to the nearest integer) in the Bible:

He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from rim to rim and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it.
1 Kings 7:23 (NIV)

Circumference: 30 cubits
Diameter: 10 cubits

Pi = Circumference/Diameter = 3 approximately

Joining in prayer this Pi Day for the Peace of Jerusalem and a piece of pie!

That’s really interesting. I’ve read “through” 1 & 2 Kings, but never noticed that detail.

Pi in the Bible first came to my attention (if my memory serves me right) in a math book - Number Tobias Dantzig.
With this endorsement:
“Beyond doubt the most interesting book on the evolution of mathematics which has ever fallen into my hands.”—Albert Einstein

Quite appropriate for Pi Day and Einstein’s birthday.
