So long as Christ is showing up at Mass and I can find a priest who can manage words of absolution, there is a lot to be grateful for. If you are willing to look around, and perhaps move, you can do better than that.
On the whole, most of the hierarchy is still better than Atthaliah and Solomon on a bad day (remember, he didn’t stop with just one temple—had to keep those foreign wives happy even if it meant building something for a god that was into child sacrifice). Still, following St. Augustine and St. Gregory the Great, I believe that on the whole we receive better shepherds than on the whole we reserve.
Anne Roche Muggeridge, in either The Gates of Hell or The Desolate City either titles her last chapter or leads it off with a quote: “Don’t let the b*stards drive you out..”
Faithful to the bitter end.
Catholic church has become nothing.
He’s always been a back-slapping, fake bonhomie piece of you know what. God, I wish for the days of Cardinal O’Connor.
When the time of the most disorienting and tormenting temptation comes -- which would be when our pastors themselves are morally disoriented, which would be now --- this is not the time to abandon your post and run, like ten of the Apostles did on the day Christ was crucified.
Christ said the hireling leaves at the point of greatest danger. The true shepherd fights the wolves and defends his flock.
By the grace of our Baptism and Confirmation, we are the Church Militant. We are to stand and fight.
I have not put one cent of my Catholic Giving money into the parish-diocese-vatican pipeline for years. I put my paltry mite into the organizations that are fighting the rot: like "Church Militant" (good name) and LifeSite News and Catholic Culture and the Lepanto Institute.
I've got them on Automatic Payment.
And I do everything I can to teach the truth (I'm a catechist on the RCIA team) and to live the truth.
My bishop --- one of the good ones, Stika, who was referenced in this article as saying he'd bring canonical penalties down on Cuomo if he was in this diocese--- is probably tired of hearing from me, but in season and out of season, I communicate to him our need for manly guidance and action.
Stay in the Sacraments. Don't disarm yourself of your most strengthening Food and your most powerful weapons.
Stand and fight.
“Catholic church has become nothing.”
Not exactly; in much of the US it has become an appendage of the state itself. People have posted endless info about the amount of government funds that pour into Church treasuries for “social services” and such; they serve Caesar now.
What priest (never mind bishop or cardinal) could ever be taken seriously if he doesn’t have a strong reaction to NY’s infanticide bill? Anyone (clergy or not) who believes an unborn baby is a human life wouldn’t worry about offending these baby-killing freaks or their paid puppets like Cuomo. If the Church won’t fight on this issue in particular, there is no way they have a valid claim to a portion of my income (as they often seek).
“Pedophiles and Baby Murderers! Is this who the Catholic Church lionizes these days?”
Wait, you forgot phony baloney “bishops” who throw their charges under the bus of MSM and Leftist provocation, slander, and death threats. And who only “apologize” when threatened with a law suit.
That’s who they are today and that is ALL they are today.
Or Cardinal “Dagger John” Hughes.

“our church has failed us...”
Yes, they have. And they could not care less.
What a nice story - thank you for posting it! Although my family were NYC Irish from that period, I did not know this priest’s name. Now I do.
We do have Father Rutler here in NYC - a truly great man.
Excommunicating pro-abortion politicians ‘not an appropriate response’
How about excommunicating nominally Catholic followers who actually worship one of the most repugnant pagan gods, for which they offer up child sacrifices?
That is, would the Cardinal object to excommunicating followers of Moloch? Or does the Cardinal support ecumenism with the pagan cult most condemned in The Bible?
For which it was stated that even giving such followers sanctuary was in itself a death penalty.
I only became aware of him a year or two ago.
Two of my great-great-grandparents were probably in that NYC Irish cohort.
The question I would ask him, just what is an appropriate response? It’s not like we’re talkin about coveting your neighbor.
My family, unfortunately, were draft dodgers during the Civil War and others were Copperheads. People in NYC are generally unaware that New Yorkers were southern sympathizers. I love informing my oh-so-liberal friends of this fact; they don’t know their own history.
No, because those same politicians vote to give billions to the catholic church for their help with immigrants. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.
I’m confused by the Alabama flag on your home page and the statement about NYC in post 29 and (maybe I am extending the unfortunate too much) that it is unfortunate that your family contained Copperheads.
I’m grateful that the one ancestor in the Northern Branch became too ill after joining to be sent South as part of the Army of invasion.
Long live the memory of Father Ryan, poet laureate of the CSA. (Though in fairness I should add that Father Baker of Buffalo has some good points as well . . ..)
Yes, my family contained Copperheads and draft dodgers, lol. Probably not the only Irish-American family with that kind of past. The Irish didn’t behave particularly well in NYC during the war.
Dont let the b*stards drive you out..
Indeed. As long a Jesus keeps showing up, I will. Besides, perhaps I can occasionally prick the conscience of someone in my parish.
Oft thought, but ne'er so well expressed.
