Late-Night Comedian Condemns Pope Francis for Homophobic Hate Speech
Friendly Atheist (Patheos) ^ | December 11, 2018 | Hemant Mehta

Jenny Hagel, a writer for Late Night with Seth Meyers who is both gay and Catholic, issued a strong denunciation of Pope Francis‘ homophobia last night.

In response to the pope reiterating Catholic doctrine that says gay priests must be celibate (or be kicked out of the priesthood), an idea that suggests there’s something intrinsically wrong with gay people, Hagel called out anyone who still sees the pope as a good guy.

"The press dubbed him “Cool Pope.” But here’s the thing: This guy’s not cool. This guy’s homophobic… We should all care about this because the pope is a world leader who’s giving people permission to be prejudiced. I’m gay and I’m Catholic, and when I came out, some people in my family told me that I was going to Hell. They got that idea at Church. The same Church that thinks it’s a good idea for 300 people to drink out of the same cup.

"This guy isn’t cool. Do you know what’s cool? Telling LGBTQ people that they are perfect and beautiful and whole just the way they are. This dude may seem harmless because shuffling around in a white robe. But remember: white robes are the official uniform of people with bad ideas.

"Hate speech is hate speech, and we need to call it out no matter where we see it."

She added that she wasn’t going to give money to her Catholic school until they sent another letter saying that everyone who went there is “created equal.”

As much as I appreciated the rant, part of me was screaming at the screen, “Just leave the Church.” Instead of just not giving money to your school, tell people to stop giving money to anything Catholic, period. It’s possible to have affection for an idea that you think has gone astray, even by those at the top — just ask never-Trump Republicans — but at some point, Catholics need to make peace with the fact that the pope isn’t the problem. The problem is the doctrine itself.

Heterosexual priests are supposed to be celibate too, what does that make him?

Leftists are now going to demand that all religions change their dogma just to make them happy?

Yes.

Unfortunately, he said nothing of the sort. His response was lame at best. For a real pope that truly reiterates Catholic doctrine, they should see: Pius V.

There is something wrong with gay people. They are not normal in that there is in them something that creates an affinity for people of the same sex that is not there in normal people.

“Remember when comedians were funny?”

Oh I do wish George Carlin was still alive. Wish his style and all the fresh material the snowflake generation has brought he would have some fun.

both gay and Catholic

She needs to repent.

Now.

While she's still alive.

Pope Francis is homophobic because he said homosexual priests need to be celibate or they’ll be defrocked? And this woman claims to be Catholic? Another homosexual confirms homosexual priests are not to be trusted, as it’s impossible for them to be celibate.

Apparently, it’s homophobic to expect a homosexual priest to be celibate. I would think that that fact means they can’t take the vow to become priests.

I have always thought the fags should have been defrocked.

RULE #1 Celibacy.

If you can’t/won’t be celibate you shouldn’t be a priest.

Case Closed.

If a minor involved or laws broken, turn over to authorities IMMEDIATELY, this sending them off with those of the same ilk (some punishment - like Brer Rabbit-DON’T throw me in that briar patch) then assign them away from where they are known doesn’t solve a thing.

I believe you could get a case if you were to say the fag priests (however few) are- at the least - being coddled -either way, the Church is acting as an enabler by not dismissing and prosecuting (or cause to be prosecuted) them immediately.

Makes no sense. All Priests must be celibate.

Which is part of the problem - there is no biblical constraint on "teachers" being married - and the Apostle that recommended it added the caveat that this idea was his own and not something handed down by God...

The Church was a thousand years old before it definitively took a stand in favor of celibacy in the twelfth century at the Second Lateran Council held in 1139, when a rule was approved forbidding priests to marry. In 1563, the Council of Trent reaffirmed the tradition of celibacy.

Demanding all priests be celibate makes no sense...it is an unnatural state and also removes one of God's greatest gifts...marriage to a life partner where a man leaves his mother and father and cleaves unto his wife...and they become one flesh.

Eastern rite churches allow the ordination of married men. Bishops on the other hand, have to be celibate.

It's not impossible for a same sex-attracted man to be celibate, but it's extremely difficult because they are trained in seminary and spend much of their time in an all-male environment.

I think at some point there will be canonized saints who are acknowledged to have been same-sex attracted but lived in exemplary chastity.

I'd like to honor John Henry Newman and Gerard Manley Hopkins for this heroic level of purity.

That's a very truncated view. See the Catholic Encyclopedia's discussion here, starting at the section headed "History of Clerical Celibacy".

I know they were only a few hundred years old when celibacy for priests was being pushed....my point is that there seems to be no “word of God” Biblical reason for it...one apostle stated his views that ‘teachers’ should be celibate and if that wasn’t possible for them, they should be married...he then stated that is was his opinion and not God’s Word as he was receiving “hints” from the Holy Spirit...(way paraphrased but the bit about his opinion being the driving force behind his discussion is accurate and it is no secret they were getting divine guidance). The further they were from contact with Jesus, the more they started modifying things to suit their human sensibilities - kind of ironic that they were struggling to be more pleasing to god when the whole point of the Crucifixion was because such attempts were never going to be sufficient and those who attempted to keep to some of the “Old ways” were chastised for having fallen from grace because they missed the point too. Even as Jesus castigated the pharisees for making a grand show of their piety and claiming sole access to the ‘mystery”, man came back and reestablished the mystique of priest/teachers and today we have a Church that seems to be involved in sending out many more irrelevant messages as they cut teachings of Jesus short....ironic since the Original Teacher, wore plain robes instead of all the golden and ornate trappings ....
