“Does that mean that God married His own mother?”

This is the type of issue you create when you make Mary into a demigoddess and idolize her.

Mary becomes the spouse of God, mother of God, and part of the Godhead...

and then you might as well be Mormon.

That would mean that God got His own mother pregnant.

That’s more ludicrous than the *You’re accusing God of being a rapist* by the Catholics.

I agree. The whole purpose behind the "mother of God" statement was not to elevate Mary....but to clarify the Jesus was indeed God.

This is a good example of unintended consequences. If the Council had simply appealed to Scripture they could have easily shown Jesus was both man and divine without having to resort to this.

Roman Catholicism has taken this way out of context and the original intended purpose.

This is a good example of what happens when you don't rely upon Scripture.

Even when I was a catholic, I figured Mormonism was a false religion, even though I thought most Mormons had a more pure lifestyle than I did.
Once I was traveling from Minneapolis to Boise, with a layover in Salt Lake City. I saw a guy with horn rimmed glasses, coveralls and work boots. If I ever had a stereotype of what a Mormon would look like, that guy fit it perfectly. 😁

It should be understood that Scripture nowhere teaches us that Mary was any of those things. What we DO know is adequate for recognizing her as the virgin Mother of Jesus, that she fulfilled prophecy, that she was a faithful mother and disciple of Jesus Christ. She is an example of selfless and sacrificial living that pleases and glorifies God.

The Apostle Paul told the believers at Ephesus:

I did not shrink back from declaring anything that was helpful to you as I taught you publicly and from house to house, testifying to Jews and Greeks alike about repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus. (Acts 20:20,21)

for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. (Acts 20:27)

Why would Paul, or any of the other Scripture writers, OMIT teaching about Mary? We should not presume to declare as dogma of the Christian faith - and binding upon all Christians - anything that cannot be proved by God's word and certainly not anything that would contradict His word. This is in no way showing Mary disrespect. In fact, it proves that she should be honored and respected based upon what Scripture DOES tell us. She doesn't need myths, legends, apparitions or "special revelations". I sometimes think some Roman Catholics want to stir up dissension and enmity with those who don't believe all the things that they do about Mary and that, I think, is what demonstrates more disrespect towards her.
