MADRID (Reuters) - Thousands of protesters gathered outside the Almudena Roman Catholic Cathedral in central Madrid on Thursday to demonstrate against any plans to bury the remains of former dictator Francisco Franco at the site.
Families of the tens of thousands of his opponents who were killed or imprisoned during his near four-decade rule oppose his burial at such an emblematic site.
Spanish lawmakers voted in September to remove the remains of Franco from a mausoleum where tens of thousands of victims of the 1936-39 civil war that brought him to power are also laid to rest.
It is still not known where his remains will be transferred to. But the Franco family has a crypt at the cathedral and Francos daughter is buried there.
People chanted Criminal out of the cathedral and carried placards reading Madrid: Without Franco and Justice!
I would chuck him in a ditch, said 74-year-old protestor Gorgonio Ferrero outside the cathedral. But not (buried) here.

How many protesters are godless Communists?
And this just in, he’s still dead.
All of them. Their ideological ancestors slaughtered priests and nuns by the thousand in Madrid in 1936.
A foolish men still fighting the civil war.

Obviously not a Christian.
I have studied this era of Spain’s history a bit. In fact, my wife’s mother is from northern Spain, live through the Spanish Civil War, and has horrific memories of the bombings and terror. She still absolutely freaks out during Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve because of the noise from the fireworks.
In any event, while we can agree that Communism is evil, I don’t see how one can defend much of what Franco did. Maybe someone here can convince me that the Catholic Church should declare his to be a Saint.
I’ve read a “little” about that era......as I understand it, Spain was racked by many warring factions.....Franco stepped in to unify a majority....
A college friend of mine’s father fought in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. He went to a reunion of his old chums in the USSR in the early 60s. Her name was Victorianamed after the victory at Stalingrad. For some reason, old Commies get a pass, but old Fascists don’t. Which ideology killed more?
“For some reason, old Commies get a pass, but old Fascists dont. Which ideology killed more?”
Good point. The only reason Franco is so vilified is that the world press are allied with the left. The same crap they’ve been doing to Trump, they first did to Franco and Marcos.
One wonders how many FReepers are too young to get your post.
#2/ Good targets. A missed opportunity for FrancoFans.
My (limited) understanding of this history is that it was during the Spanish civil war that George Orwell started becoming disillusioned with Socialists/Communists who talked of human rights etc but then denied and defended Joseph Stalin at every turn.
None of my comments are a defense of Franco. I just know that some of the fiercest critics have no moral standing to make the complaint.
Homage to Catalonia was a wonderful read. Problem is I couldn’t tell who the bad guys were. Orwell joined a rag tag group that was ill trained, ill equipped and spent many nights sleeping in the mud and stench. His wife stayed in Barcelona in the meantime. He took a bullet in the neck. Could have cost him his life. If so it would not have written 1984 a decade later. Not something I would have undertaken. Strange.
Chevy Chase always was a leftist stooge.
I was wondering about that.
No one’s trying to canonize him, just trying to give his remains a decent reburial.
Anyone who opposes that isn’t even human, but rather a demon from Hell.
in the meanwhile, lenin and mao are still worshipped and glorified by the stupid, evil slaves of satan.
This just in: Chevy Chase’s career is still dead.
He’s still dead.
